Coach Heidi here! Let's talk training periodization! I use the word a lot when talking about our training plans, but what does it mean exactly?
Here鈥檚 a quick & general summary of how I periodize training:
Within every MACRO cycle of training (that's the longest term cycle- lets say one year) there should be multiple MESO cycles (medium term, like 3 months) and within those, are your MICRO cycles (weeks), where certain things are put on maintenance mode and other things become the priority.
This is a wholistic approach to make sure you have balanced training and each element has time to be prioritized. It's what we do in the studio and what I do with my clients.
For example, within a yearly MACRO cycle, I'll program MESO cycles where we prioritize hypertrophy (muscle growth), injury prevention, weak points, squat, bench and/or press variation, or that sort of thing- depending on the person and the goal.
Each of these focuses play a major role, and they can鈥檛 all be maximized at the same time. So periodization is used to figure out what should be prioritized at different points within your yearly macro cycle!
