Thinking about competing in the upcoming jiu jitsu tournament? 🤔

Scary. We get it. All of us coaches here have competed and we all have been nervous before an upcoming fight or match. But you know what, it’s honestly the best indicator of how you’re progressing and what you’re good at and where you need to improve.

And when you think about it, life is all about experiences and sure hearing about it or coming to watch is cool (and super appreciated), but if fear is what’s holding you back, reframe it as an entertaining chapter in your life story. 📚

The tournament is Saturday July 4 in Chemainus. Registration closes June 28. If you want to sign up (it’s all ages by the way), talk to one of us coaches, send us a message, or type into Google: Smoothcomp South Island Open and you’ll find the tournament and how to register.

Everyone who trains at Black Rock is of course part of the team but you could be a part of the competition team! So let’s do this! ☑️

We’re back in the Parksville Canada Day Parade this year! 🇨🇦

And this year is gonna be bigger and better than last year! A float maybe?…

We’ll provide more details as we get them but of course it’ll be Wednesday July 1 - the parade starts at 10am so we will need to meet by 9am at our designated spot (which I’ll provide once I know where it’ll be).

Please send a message if you’d like to be in the parade with us - the more the merrier! Make sure you wear your Black Rock merchandise and get ready to wave! 👋🏽

BLACK ROCK SUMMER CAMPS ☀️

Join us for our Black Rock Martial Arts Summer Camps! Kids will spend the week learning Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, and Jiu Jitsu, playing games, making friends, building confidence, and staying active.

Location is Parksville at Black Rock Martial Arts
2-1156 Franklins Gull Road

📅 Camp Dates:
• July Camp 13–17
• August Camp 10–14

⏰ Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Drop-off: 8:30–9:00 AM
Pick-up: 12:00–12:30 PM

👦 Ages: 6+

💰 Cost:• $300 for one camp • $500 for both camps

⚠️ Only 15 spots available per camp!

Proud sponsor of Oceanside Minor Baseball ⚾️

When we decided to sponsor Oceanside Minor Baseball, it actually brought up a lot of feelings for Marco and I. We both played ball on this exact field when we were kids. I played a couple seasons with the boys before transitioning over to fastball. I also spent many afternoons umpiring at these fields as well. And Marco played a few seasons with fond memories of his grandparents watching him play.

Our love for baseball is right up there with our love for martial arts so deciding to sponsor was easy. But to see our Black Rock banner in dead center field filled us with so much joy.

Thanks to all the coaches, players, umpires, and wonderful people who keep baseball alive and well in our community.

Our 9am kickboxing crew ❤️🥊

No better way to start your day than getting your training done alongside other motivated people like you!

This class is great because it’s typically a smaller class and the benefits of that are that people know each others names, this group stays really consistent, and they are happy to see each other walk through the door.

Come on out and join them sometime! Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-10am. 😃

Last week, we had some of the Lululemon Nanaimo team out for another kickboxing class and they CRUSHED IT! Their enthusiasm is palpable and the hour flew by.

Looking for extra mat time?

The weekend of June 13/14 we will have open mat both Saturday and Sunday! If you’ve never been, open mat is the perfect chance to roll, spar, drill, ask questions, and learn from teammates in a relaxed environment. Basically an extra day (in this case 2!) to get a workout in, practice, and/or learn a thing or two from whoever is there.

Special shoutout to for hosting these monthly Saturday open mats.
