π NLBA DRILL OF THE WEEK | DEFENSE
π SEE IT. READ IT. REACT.
Great defense starts before the pass! This week, we're developing defensive awareness, anticipation and decision-making with three age-specific drills.
π’ U12 | SEE BALL & PLAYER
π Drill: 1 passer at the top, 1 offensive player on the wing and 1 defender.
The offensive player moves to get open while the defender works to maintain vision of both the ball and their player. The defender must prevent a catch in the paint for 5 seconds.
β‘οΈ Progression: Add changes of direction and backdoor cuts.
π¬ Ask: "What helped you recognize where your player was going?"
π‘ U14 | DENY OR PROTECT?
π Drill: 2v2 with the ball starting at the top and an offensive player on the wing.
The wing player works to get open while their defender decides whether to deny the pass or protect against a backdoor cut. Play live for 8 seconds.
β‘οΈ Progression: Add cutting, relocation and screening.
π¬ Ask: "When did denying the pass help, and when did it create an opportunity for the offense?"
π΄ U15βU17 | ANTICIPATE & DISRUPT
π Drill: 3v3 with players positioned at the top and wings.
Offense uses cutting, passing and relocation to create scoring opportunities. Defenders must anticipate movement, protect passing lanes, communicate and recover.
β‘οΈ Progression: Add off-ball screens and allow the offense to change actions freely.
π¬ Ask: "How did your positioning and communication help your teammates?"
π§ TRANSFORMATIONAL COACHING TIP
Rather than constantly correcting athletes, encourage them to read the game, make decisions and reflect on their choices. Give them opportunities to explore solutions and build confidence!
