The Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador swimming community is shocked and saddened to learn of the the passing of our dear friend, Bill Hogan.
Billโs contributions to swimming are difficult to overstate. He served in leadership roles with Swimming NL, including President and Vice-President, represented Newfoundland and Labrador on the national and international stage, served as Vice-President of Swimming Canada, President of the Aquatic Federation of Canada, and worked as a FINA (World Aquatics) Master Trainer for more than two decades. He officiated at many international events as well as several Olympic games. Thousands of officials around the world benefited from his mentorship and expertise. He was also inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sport Hall of Fame as a Builder in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the sport.
Yet, despite his remarkable accomplishments, Bill never lost sight of what mattered most: the people.
He was a mentor, a teacher, a volunteer, and a friend. He generously shared his knowledge, encouraged others to become involved, and helped shape generations of athletes, coaches, and officials. His passion for swimming was matched only by his commitment to ensuring that others had the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
The swimming community in Newfoundland and Labrador is stronger because of Billโs vision, leadership, and decades of service. His legacy can be seen in every competition, every official on deck, every volunteer who steps forward, and every swimmer who benefits from the strong foundation he helped build.
Bill leaves behind a lasting legacy not only through the positions he held and the honours he received, but through the countless people he inspired along the way.
On behalf of Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador, we extend our deepest condolences to his loving wife Janet, his children, extended family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Thank you, Bill, for your lifelong dedication to our sport and our community. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.
Rest in peace.
