I regularly play with Jack & Louise McCarthy and Janis Byrne in Terra Nova and Nash Denic, Leigh Puddester and Steve Snow at Bally Haly.
6. What's your favorite course that you have played? What course would you like to play anywhere in the world?
It would be a tie between the old Ballybunion Golf Course in Ireland and Terra Nova (Twin Rivers) Golf Course. I would love to play Pine Valley Golf Club
7. Where and when did you start golfing?
I took a lesson from Bruce Imrie at Bally Haly when I was 10… but couldn’t get a regular game so I switched to baseball. Finally put my lesson to work at Pippy Park’s Captain’s Hill 9 Hole in the late 80’s.
8. Can you (briefly) tell us your most memorable golf experience.
Standing on the First tee of the Old Course in St Andrews for the Rotary International Golf Tournament waiting to hit my first shot.
9. Can you (briefly) tell us your funniest golf experience.
I was playing in an event in BC when one of the guys in my group slipped on the plastic pond liner and fell into a water hazard while trying to retrieve his ball. He started to panic as he slid further down into the pond and was yelling for help and that he couldn’t swim. He was out of reach of our outstretched clubs, so I had to jump into the pond and help him get back to the shore… that’s when I stood up in the pond and found out the water was just above waist deep. Then we had to play the final 2 holes drenched to the bone.
10. What is your greatest golf accomplishment? How do you like to relax?
Getting my Golf Canada National Rules Certification. I like to relax by golfing with my friends.
11. What is your most treasured golf possession?
My Player’s Badge/money clip from the 2011 Bob Hope Classic which was used as my all access pass for events and inside the ropes. The most amazing birthday present ever!
12. What is your best/worst quality on the golf course?
My best quality is I like to play quickly while my worst quality is I like to play quickly!
13. What 3 professional golfers would complete your dream foursome for a round of golf?
Those three would be Lee Trevino, Rory McIlroy and Minjee Lee.
14. What 3 Newfoundlanders, past or present, would you like to join you at a dream dinner?
Without a doubt Gordon Pinsent, Tommy Sexton and Tommy Ricketts.
15. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? What is your best score ever? When and what course?
I had a hole-in-one in October, 2009 on Hole #11 at Terra Nova Twin Rivers - I have the fewest holes-in-one in my household. My best ever score was 70 which I've done twice - from the back tees at Clovelly in 2015 and from the back tees at Terra Nova in 2016.
16. What is your favorite/least favorite golfing hole on a Newfoundland & Labrador golf course?
My favorite hole is Hole #5 at Humber Valley Resort while my least favorite is Hole #17 at the old Bally Haly (I won’t miss it).
17. What do you think is the worst rule in golf and how would you change it?
Stroke and distance for a shot hit out of bounds is harsh. I’d like to see Model Local Rule E-5 implemented as a relief option, drop at the point of OB for 2 penalty strokes. It would speed up play.
18. What advice would you give to a young golfer starting to play golf today?
Play with better players as much as you can and ask questions. Practice the short game around the green the most. Play efficiently.
