FITNESS POST FOR COACHES (or parents with some fitness knowledge).

So the course I am currently studying with ISSA is : " Safely Training the Adolescent Female Athlete"

Note one: females are NOT males with less testosterone! You CAN NOT train a female as you would and male and expect them NOT to get injured.

Note two: proper rest is VERY important and essential for the growing athlete - teens try to cheat on sleep. This will reflect in performance.

Note three: major low back and hamstring strengthening is required for females (will be explained a little in a few points)

Note four: cross training is SO important to decrease risk of repetitive strain injuries. (Hence why I loved the spin bike so much)

Note five: patellofemoral stress syndrome is HIGH in female athletes because of muscle imbalances in their lower extremities.

Note six: research has shown that females will primarily use their quads when pivoting or landing where males will use their hamstrings.

Note seven: females are quad dominate- without proper strength training they DO NOT recruit their hamstrings as efficiently as males!!!!!! Proper strength balance between quads/hams is 2/3. This is imperative to protecting the ACL.
So take a look at all your skaters.
Who has constant hip flexion? Pushing with their quads rather than through their glutes. That's why so many skaters have low back issues and hip flexor issues and then we might as well keep going down the line to knee issues!
Train smart everyone!
Coaches make sure your skaters develop hamstrings and use their glutes!!!!!!
