It can be challenging to ride your bike into the wilderness from an urban area without running into cars.
Well, I found one such ride from Ottawa via trans Canada trail to Carleton Place, then South to Montague or Smith's Falls, then back North up to Arnprior and return. In total it's about 300km and can be done in a weekend.
Within 15 minutes of leaving Carleton Place, it was evident the critters loved the Ottawa Valley Rail Trail.
4 porcupines, huge deer, leopard frogs, blue herons, hawks, mountain lion f***s (fur in it).
Seeing as these are railbeds, there is less than 2% gradient, so you can really take in the views or power forward. I did a little of both.
