West Ottawa Basketball Association

The West Ottawa Hornets program, with its dedicated volunteer coaches, helps develop the player’s basketball and athletic skills to allow them to compete at a higher level of basketball. All West Ottawa Hornets teams compete against other competitive teams as a part of the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) and the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association (EOBA). Teams will practice in local gyms

and have home and away games throughout the city. At the West Ottawa Hornets U10 and U12 levels, the emphasis is on development and enjoying the sport of basketball. Coaches focus on developing fundamentals and athleticism while ensuring fair play and sportsmanship. Teams practice twice a week and have minimal travel throughout the season to qualify for the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships. Games played against other competitive teams provide opportunities for the players to learn and grow their understanding of the fundamentals of the sport. The practices and games create a “team” atmosphere where players and friendships develop and grow. Our U14, U15 and U19 West Ottawa Hornets teams will practice 2-3 times per week in local gyms and will travel to tournaments throughout the season to qualify for the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships. Through a higher level of competition, players will learn, develop and grow with their team while increasing their basketball skills and knowledge. All competitive team Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches are NCCP trained and certified, providing players will knowledgeable and qualified coaches. Players of all experience and skill levels are encouraged to try out for our West Ottawa Hornets teams. Our Competitive Program provides an excellent opportunity for players to develop their basketball skills through team work. The West Ottawa Basketball Association Recreational Program is intended to expose children in the community to the game of basketball and provide them with a positive atmosphere to develop as players and people. Our group of volunteer coaches is dedicated to helping players improve their basketball fundamentals with an emphasis on FUN! West Ottawa Stingers recreational teams are selected with parity in mind – meaning the pool of available players are evaluated for various skills and distributed evenly across teams so that no one team is stronger than the other. We understand that friends may want to play together and we will do our best to accommodate friend requests. The Recreational Program basketball schedules are determined based on our volunteer coaches' availability. During the registration process there is an option to identify a maximum of 2 evenings per week that a player is NOT available. Although we cannot guarantee it, we do our best to accommodate these types of requests when feasible. The Recreational season starts in late October and runs until the end of March. All divisions practice 1 evening per week, Monday to Friday. Small Ball and U10 practice for 1 hour and U12 to U19 levels practice for 1.5 hours. West Ottawa Stingers U10 to U16 teams play one game per week, on SATURDAYS, starting in November. U19 team games are once a week on a week night. The Year End Tournament is held in March at the end of the basketball season. The West Ottawa Basketball Association participates in the West-End Basketball League (WEBL) which brings together eight area associations from west Ottawa and the south areas of Ottawa to have fun, develop sportsmanship and compete against each other in a positive setting.
