We provide instruction and train in Yoshinkan Aikido--a style of Aikido that emphasizes proper form and the practical application of techniques. Through training in basic movements (kihon dosa) and basic techniques (kihon waza) students learn to develop a strong centre line and focused power that are considered to be the foundations of effective Aikido techniques. Yoshinkan Aikido does not depend significantly on upper body strength, and is, therefore, an ideal method of self-defence for people of all ages. Although originally derived from samurai self-defense techniques, Yoshinkan Aikido is a non-aggressive and non-competitive martial art. The ultimate aims of Yoshinkan Aikido, like all budo, are to improve oneself and to learn about Japanese martial tradition.
Aikido Yoshinkai Ottawa is a member in good standing of Aikido Yoshinkai Canada and of the Aikido Yoshinkai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan. All of our instructors are registered with the Aikido Yoshinkai Foundation in Tokyo, Japan. Our chief instructor is Hans de Groot sensei (4th Dan AYF).
