Aikido of Orleans
Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex
1490 Youville Drive
The purpose of martial arts is to forge the mind and body in order to overcome the challenges of life. Aikido is a self-defensive Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba Sensei in the early 1900’s as a result of his extensive stud
y of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu, a martial art derived from the sword/Katana techniques of the Samurai. Aikido uses unbalancing and very little strength in a circular motion to safely control an attacker resulting in a joint lock to the wrist, elbow, shoulder, etc. Yoseikan Aikido was founded by Minoru Mochizuki Sensei in the 1930’s. At 23 his teacher, Jigoro Kano Sensei (founder of Judo), sent him to study with Morihei Ueshiba Sensei (founder of Aikido) as an uchi deshi, a live-in student. He also studied with Gichin Funakoshi Sensei, the founder of Shotokan Karate. In 1931 Mochizuki Sensei opened his own dojo and focused on developing his own style. Mochizuki Sensei was the last living student of the three great teachers, Ueshiba Sensei (Aikido), Kano Sensei (Judo) and Funakoshi Sensei (Karate). Following many years of training and study as an uchi deshi (live-in student) with Mochizuki Sensei, our teacher, Patrick Augé Sensei, was appointed Yoseikan Aikido’s North American representative. Yoseikan Aikido is accessible to all. It is non-competitive and can be practiced for a lifetime. Students learn and practice at their own pace. The teaching of Yoseikan Aikido is aimed at helping the students to develop self-respect and respect for others, self-esteem and concentration, as well as the physical benefits of diligent training. The guiding philosophy behind Yoseikan teaching is “The Way of Harmony”. Classes are held in Hall “A”. Adults: Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 pm. Children (5-8yrs): Mondays and Fridays from 6 – 7 pm. Youth (8-14yrs): Wednesdays 6-7:30 pm and Fridays 7-8:30 pm
