Stress is everywhere.

Work, money, kids, parents, your health, the health of those you love, the news, grocery shopping, doing laundry, taking out the trash … it can all get overwhelming. With everything going on, who has time to exercise? Would it be better to skip the gym and spend an hour catching up on emails or maybe trying to make a dent in the pile of dishes on the kitchen counter?

Science says no.

Exercise is one of the best natural stress relievers we have.

Exercising reduces your levels of adrenaline and cortisol, the body’s stress hormones. At the same time it stimulates the production of endorphins. Ever wonder why you feel so good after a workout? It’s not just because the workout is over! Exercising causes endorphins to flood the body, leading to feelings of relaxation and optimism.

Regular strength training also builds your self-confidence as you master new skills, become stronger, and increase your stamina. It’s an escape from your worries, a chance to get out of your head and fully inhabit your body.

But here’s the catch – too much exercise, or exercise that is too intense (all the time) can actually cause MORE stress than your body is capable of currently handling.

Aim to strike a nice balance between prioritizing strength training, sprinkle in some low intensity cardio and HIIT training, and top it all off with some lower intensity exercise like Yoga, Pilates, etc. That is the exact reason why we include so many different class offerings with our memberships – to set you up for success!

I first became a Strength & Conditioning Coach in 2011. Prior to that, I started to get into training clients as early as 2008. Here are my Top 12, yes 12, most valuable lessons I have learned about exercise and all things Health & Fitness. These are irrefutable when it comes to the maturity needed to a lifetime of health and wellness.

I did my absolute best to get this list down to a catchy ‘Top 10,’ but every single one of these topics belongs on this list.

8. Novelty is the spice of life (or fitness)

In a world that constantly chases the next trend, it’s easy to believe that your fitness routine always needs to feel new, exciting, and different.

And while novelty and variety absolutely have their place—they can boost motivation, challenge your body in new ways, and keep things enjoyable—they should never come at the expense of the fundamentals.

The truth is, long-term health and fitness are built on consistency, not constant change.

The basics work.
Strength training.
Proper movement patterns.
Progressive overload.
Adequate recovery.

These principles have stood the test of time for a reason.

Variety should complement your routine—not replace what’s proven to work. In fact, go enjoy those Zumba classes. Join your friends in a game of pickup basketball or Pickleball. Swap exercises, try new formats, explore different environments—but keep your foundation solid. Because it’s not the newest workout that delivers results… it’s the one you can commit to over the long haul.

Stay consistent. Stay grounded. And let variety enhance the journey—not define it.

We care about working out, of course, but our community is just as important as our fitness.

Something happens when we sweat together. When we workout together, it brings us together, forging a supportive community full of people interested in health, wellness, and constantly striving for improvement.

Community is important -- studies show loneliness is harmful to your well-being! What’s more, people who work out with a friend say they enjoy it more, push harder, and meet their goals faster.

If you’ve been exercising solo, come see what our community can do for you and your well-being!

9. Nobody cares what you can lift

Truly, nobody cares what you can lift. In the nearly 20 years I have been lifting weights, I can’t remember a single instance of someone asking me how much I can bench press…

One of the most common mistakes in the gym is chasing numbers—lifting heavier at the expense of proper form. This “ego lifting” might feel impressive in the moment, but it often leads to poor movement patterns, stalled progress, and increased risk of injury.

Real progress comes from mastering the fundamentals.

Focus on controlled, intentional movements. Prioritize proper technique, full range of motion, and muscle engagement over simply adding more weight. When you move well, you build a stronger foundation—one that supports long-term performance and resilience.
Remember: the goal isn’t to lift the most weight. The goal is to lift well.

Even if you are lifting with impeccable form, pushing your body’s limit all the time can also do a number on your body, causing all sorts of aches and pains in the long run.

Train with purpose. Train with control. Challenging, not impossible. Results will follow.

Why start now?

Let's start answering this question with another question: What has held you back until now?

Do you have a fear of being judged at the gym? You don't know how to do some of the basic or complex movements? You're not sure that you are actually capable of sticking with it, or maybe you're just not a "fitness person"? Whatever your reason, we understand. No one is immune; we are all human and no one wants to feel judged or foolish.

But let me tell you: The time to start is now.

Our community is full of people like you who were scared and unsure at first and who now have made exercise a part of their daily routine.

We will break down those walls through education, motivation, and confidence in your abilities. Not sure how to do one of the movements in a workout? We will teach you. Not sure you can force yourself to get to the gym every night after a long day at work? We will motivate you!

Don't think you have it in you to get through an entire workout when it’s been months (or years) since you exercised? We will help you build the confidence to do so and cheer you on!

10. Strength training (building muscle) is an investment

Building muscle is one of the most valuable long-term investments you can make in your health. It supports your metabolism, protects your joints, improves bone density, and helps you maintain independence as you age. The muscle you build today becomes the foundation for how you move, feel, and function years from now.

Too often, fitness is viewed through a short-term lens, or worse yet, just focusing on the number of calories ‘burned’ during exercise. But strength training shifts the focus to longevity—helping you stay resilient, capable, and energized through every stage of life.

Think of each workout as a deposit into your future self.

Train with purpose. Build for life.
