Although our race last night didn’t exactly go according to plan, we found glimpses of speed and a reason to regroup and keep coming back.
Our night started rocky as we had another engine misfire, this time high rpm. We pulled the spark plugs and found a damaged electrode on the #1 cylinder. We managed to get a new set in and finish practice with the engine running crisp.
We made a boat load of setup changes before our heat to try to correct our camber and help the car turn. Unfortunately as we were about to roll out for the heat we noticed we had a problem with the cover on our quick change rear diff. Something had caused our cover bolts to back off considerably in practice. We resealed it and got it together just in time to make the line up.
This did not solve the problem however, as soon as we took the green flag we had an incredible driveline vibration. Despite this the car was on fire, putting down times nearing 14.6 seconds. A tremendous improvement and proof that the old car still has some speed left in it.
We battled hard with the 55, but ultimately lost out, finishing 4th in the heat race. As we pulled it in and jacked it up, the rear diff no longer wanted to spin freely. Couple this with a pinion that was walking out nearly 3/4 of an inch and our night was done.
We’ll tear it apart and see exactly what went wrong in hopes to make the Bridge City 200 on August 6th.
Thanks to all the folks that came out to support us as well as a few rival crew chiefs for taking the time to have a look at our diff. We also had some special guests in the crowd that helped to lift our spirits.
