This year Port Colborne Girls Hockey Association, โThe Waveโ. (which serves South Niagara and beyond) is excited to welcome Jesse Vujasic from JVR Hockey who will be providing ๐๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ข๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ก๐ง ๐ง๐ฅ๐๐๐ก๐๐ก๐ weekly, for all U13 and under players! Jesse is a previous National Womenโs Hockey League (NWHL) player. This partnership was made possible through a grant approved by the City of Port Colborne. This means that Wave families will save the cost on additional skill development and this also ensures that new and existing players will have the best chance for success to learn and love the game of hockey!
We are also excited to welcome Chris Huneault from HHPHockey who is joining our bench staff. Chris, along with some of his team will be coaching our ๐
๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ team! Chris will also be helping at some additional team practices for our U9-U13 teams to support not only our girls, but our new & aspiring coaches who can learn from one of the best local coaches in South Niagara. Chris is not only known for his coaching skills, but his positive team culture and leadership both on and off the ice.
In addition, Port Colborne is also introducing its first EVER Senior Ladies Intramural league. With 4 teams confirmed (and growing) this is giving over 60 local women the chance to play & learn the game. Playing on a weekly basis, these local ladies get access to some fun, no bull-$&! # exercise and comradery.
We do need our communities help though!! We are in a need of a few additional U9 - U13 players, to ensure all 3 age groups have teams. Currently we may be merging our U9's to U13 into two teams (U11 & U13), but when girls have the chance to play amongst their peers, statistics show that they are more likely to have better outcomes of sticking with the game!
According to Canada Parks and Recreation, females have improved life outcomes when they find an activity they love at a young age. Currently, only 1 out of 4 females are committed to returning to sport since the pandemic and we are trying to change that!
