Your doctor has 10 minutes with you. Talking about GSM isn't at the top of the list. Here's what usually doesn't fit in that window. π
GSM-Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause. It's the medical term for what happens to va**nal, v***ar, and urinary tissue when estrogen drops in perimenopause and menopause. Unlike hot flashes, it doesn't tend to fade with time. Left unaddressed, it tends to get worse.
Here's what 30 years of nursing has taught me: most women with GSM have never been diagnosed. Not because the symptoms aren't real because the system was never built to ask about them. Embarrassment, time constraints, and a term that's still new to a lot of providers all add up to the same result: women quietly managing this for years, sometimes decades, without ever knowing it has a name.
You're not falling apart. You're missing information nobody gave you. That's the whole reason I do this work-30+ years as an RN, my own experience navigating menopause after breast cancer, and now helping women get the answers their appointments never had time for.
Has a doctor ever brought up GSM with you, or is this the first time you're hearing the term? Tell me in the comments.
If this explains something you've been quietly dealing with, send me a message. Let's talk about what your real options look like.
