February 26, 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the official opening of the Newcastle Memorial Arena – a place built on dedication, remembrance, and incredible community spirit.

It all began in 1948 when the Newcastle Veterans Association announced their dream: to build a living memorial to honour the local boys who gave their lives defending our country in the two world wars. The town rallied behind the idea with fundraising events, door-to-door canvassing and even a raffle for a 1950 Studebaker. Volunteers gave their time every weekend to lay the floor and erect the trusses. This arena truly was built by the community, for the community.

The dream became reality as the arena opened its doors on February 26, 1951. It was a proud and unforgettable day for Newcastle.

Over the years, the arena continued to grow and evolve:
• 1967 – Artificial ice was installed
• 1969 – Renovations by the Lions Club added a warm spectator viewing area and a new clock donated by generous local businesses
• 1976 – The arena was temporarily closed due to safety concerns but reopened after repairs
• 1977 – The original building was demolished to make way for a new, larger arena to better serve the growing community
• 1978 – The brand-new arena officially opened on April 8
• 2002 – The building was given a facelift with a refresh of the lobby, washrooms, dressing rooms and more
• 2023 – Extensive renovations took place over the course of several months with a grand reopening on November 25
• 2026 – Community members celebrated the 75th anniversary with at a free public skate event on February 16

For 75 years, Newcastle Memorial Arena has been more than just a rink – it has been a gathering place, a memorial to honour those who served, and the heart of countless memories. We are grateful to the veterans, volunteers, employees, service clubs, businesses, and families who have made it all possible!
