To Stretch Or Not To Stretch?
That Is The Question.
Stretching has become a hot topic as of late, especially as many in the clinical world have looked closer at the science and questioned some of the widely accepted myths surrounding the topic.
To avoid the confusion, it's always helpful to know (a) why you are stretching and (b) if the stretch is making any improvements.
Here demonstrates a simple test that shows .student doesn't need a hip flexor stretch on her left hip.
Know the name of the test? Leave your answer in the comments!

Fitness is Simple.

Sure there is an art to it.

But the fundamentals remain the same no matter what the goal is:

Know your baseline.
Apply the stressor. (Yes, doing "fitness" activities is a stress.)
Examine the outcome.
Make the necessary changes to improve the desired outcome.
Rinse and repeat.

Do you know where the true challenge lies?

The true challenge is in maintaining the aspects that support our pursuit of improved fitness.

Things like:

Consistent quality sleep.
Excellent nutrition.
Stress management.
Mental health.
Motivation & purpose.

This is where the journey truly begins.

So if you've been having trouble in the gym, perhaps it's time to step back and re-examine the fundamentals.

"You can't build a great building on a weak foundation." - Gordon B. Hinckley

Meet Michelle! The newest member of the Thrive Fitness team.⁣

Michelle completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. Throughout her degree she worked as a Kinesiologist in numerous settings including clinical rehabilitation and high performance sport centres. ⁣

After recovering from a back injury, Michelle learned how important proper movement is for long term health and prevention of future injury risks. She is passionate about educating and supporting her clients throughout the process so they walk away feeling confident and strong. ⁣

With years of experience as both the athlete and the coach, she knows when to push and when to step back and correct in order to help you achieve your goals. ⁣

When not in the gym, Michelle can be found hiking up the nearest mountain or cooking with friends (usually tacos). ⁣

Michelle specializes in ICBC Kinesiology & Personal Training. You can follow her for rehab and training tips or book in with her via the link in our bio! ⁣

Schedule In Your Movement & Exercise

Whether you are working at home, at the office or at the works yard it can be difficult to find a balance between your professional responsibilities and taking care of your health & wellness.

That's why we recommend placing your movement breaks and exercise sessions into your weekly schedule. That way you have carved out the time to take a break from your work tasks & give your body (and mind!) a refreshing recharge.

Whether it's a three minute stretch in your cubicle, a walk around the block or a fitness class on your lunch break every second of movement makes a difference.

Being sedentary is hazardous to our health.

Movement is the antidote.

When seeking out a Coach, it's always better to learn "how" they think as opposed to "what" they think. ⁣

We love it when clients ask us questions about their Active Rehab or Personal Training programs. It means they are involved in the process & want to learn more. ⁣

However, rather than asking about which exercises are in the program (because there are infinite options) we recommend asking why exercises are in the program. ⁣

This offers you valuable insight into how your Coach thinks before you even begin a training session. The key takeaway here which is often overlooked is: thinking before taking action. ⁣

When you know how your Coach makes their decisions, you're building a strong foundation of understanding. This relationship is key in driving you towards your fitness and wellness goals. ⁣

Have you ever heard of the Functional Movement Screen?

The Functional Movement Screen is a great tool to help fitness professionals take a snapshot view of an individual’s fundamental movement patterns.

This can be very helpful when designing a purposeful training program. If you don't know where you're starting from, how do you know where to go?

The info gained from performing a Functional Movement Screen is used to help make decisions like which exercises to possibly avoid and which to focus on in training. That's it!

It is not intended to assess or diagnose any type of medical issue or the root cause of movement impairment.

Read on to learn more and see some cool pictures of a screen taking place.

Training = Rehab

Rehab = Training

It’s a simple enough equation which demonstrates the similarities between the worlds of rehabilitation and strength training.

Both worlds which sometimes appear inaccessible to the general population.

And too often the model for managing musculoskeletal disorders leads an individual to become dependent on something external to themselves.

Read on the Thrive Journal blog why the true value of the equation lies in it's message of empowerment and how it can help you overcome pain for good.

| Strength Is An Attitude |⁣

Training for strength is not about how much you can lift.⁣

It's about having the courage to conquer your weakness. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣
"If you think you are only strong if you can lift a certain number, whatever that number is, you will feel pretty weak most of the time. Strength is not a data point; it’s not a number. It’s an attitude."⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- Mark Reifkind, Strong First Master Certifed Instructor⁣⁣
