Friday Lake to Johnson Lake on the O.T.H Trail

Join us for a 7 to 17 kilometre hike on Sunday August 30th from Friday Lake to Johnson Lake on the O.T.H trail. For those wanting a shorter walk they could turn around at the sugar shack.

Meet at 8AM in New Liskeard at the municipal parking lot for possible car pooling or at 8.20 at the Latchford gas station or at 8.40 at the junction of highway eleven and the Roosevelt road south entrance.

Four of us will be doing a trail clearing trip from September 5th to 12th and you are welcome to join for all or part. Three of us will be hiking the O.T.H trail from Latchford to Rabbit Lake road October 1st to 7th. You are welcome to join us.

Hike around the Copper Lake Loop

Join us for the 9 kilometre hike around the Copper Lake Loop on Saturday August 8th. This is a very scenic route which passes through some beautiful pine forests and includes several lookouts. There will be the opportunity to swim at Copper Lake. Meet at 8am in New Liskeard at the municipal parking lot or at 8.15 at the North Cobalt post office for possible car pooling. Join us for a paddle and a hike on Sunday August 2 to Rib Mountain.

We will drive off Highway eleven on the short Stan Wattam road, paddle across Rib Lake, portage to Cliff Lake, hike around the Cliff Lake trail and return along the Crevasse section of the O.T.H trail. Last year we did this trip leaving New Liskeard at 8AM and returned at 5 pm. This is one of the most scenic routes in Temiskaming. We may be slowed down by blueberries. Meet at 8AM in New Liskeard at the municipal parking lot or at 8.20 at the Latchford gas station or at approximately 8.40 at the Stan Wattam road. Please call or text 705-648-3310 if you plan on joining us. At present Murray has no paddling partner. Let him know if you would like to reserve a canoe trip seat.

Discover Fourbass Lake on Sunday July 26, 2026

Join us for about 12 kilometres of paddling and 2 kilometres of hiking on Sunday July 26th on Fourbass Lake. The paddle will go from the north end of Fourbass Lake to the south end and then up the Matabitchuan river to look at one pictograph of a moose. The hike will be to the Fourbass lookouts which has a view to Lake Temiskaming and Québec. Meet at 8AM in New Liskeard at the municipal parking lot or at 8.15 at the north Cobalt post office.

Bring your own canoe or phone or text Murray at 705 648 3310 to reserve a seat. There will be opportunities to swim.

"Our 21 day canoe trip became a 8 day trip. Chased out of Wabakimi. Canoes left on an island we hope remains unburned. Three vehicles parked at Mattice Lake Outfitters just south of Armstrong. Two appear unburned. Highway to Armstrong still closed. Spent one night surrounded by fire on a rocky point I have named Salvation Point."

A Paddle, a Hike and a Swim on Saturday July 4th

Join us for a short paddle on Hearst Lake, short hike to North Johnson Lookout and a swim on Saturday July 4th. Bring your own canoe or phone or text to reserve a seat. This trip will be over by 1PM and you must phone or text for meeting location and time. I will not be around to instigate Nastawgan trips until August. Happy Canada Day and keep your cool.

Trail Report for The O.T.H Trail South End By Murray Muir

Amy and I did a one day hike from the Rabbit Lake Road to Thorne. My last one day hike of that section in 2022 took 18 hours. This June it took 25 and a half hours. The blowdowns were so bad in some places it was easier to crawl than walk. Our spring hike avoided that section this year because it was already bad in 2025. Don't think hikers with a big pack will want to tackle the south end.
