🏒 Rule of the Week

Proper helmet and facial-protector fit is a point of emphasis for the 2026–27 season. This week’s video introduces the acronym SNUG to help officials remember what to look for:

S – Snug fit on the head
N – No tilt
U – Up-close cage
G – Good and tight chinstrap

The video also reviews the procedure officials should follow when this equipment is not being worn properly.

Rule of the Week: Goaltender Safety - NEW RULE FOR 2026-2028

This week’s Rule of the Week examines a new goaltender-safety procedure introduced under Rule 6.18(a).

In U13 hockey and below, if a goaltender is struck in the head by the puck, the referee must stop play as soon as it is safe to do so. However, officials should allow a brief moment to determine whether the puck enters the goal directly.

If the puck enters the goal directly after striking the goaltender’s mask or helmet—including after contacting a goal post or the crossbar—the goal is allowed, provided no player from either team touches the puck. Once another player contacts the puck, play must be stopped immediately.

This new procedure balances the possibility of a legitimate goal being scored with the need to provide young goaltenders with prompt assessment following potential head contact.

Hockey Canada Officiating Program Branch Awards
The Hockey Canada Officiating Branch Awards are presented annually to the Most Promising, Most Improved and Most Deserving official in the Hockey Nova Scotia branch.
The guidelines established for these awards are as follows:

Most Improved: The official who has shown the most improvement within their officiating calibre of hockey. This is not necessarily the best official but the one who has progressed the most through their attendance at clinics, seminars and on-ice efforts.

We recognize your continued on ice growth and thank you for all you do for our program.
