Kootenay Paragliding

Kootenay Paragliding Kootenay Paragliding offers Tandem paraglider flights, instruction, and guiding in the area surrounding Nelson, BC.

If you've always wanted to soar like a bird, paragliding is the most affordable, practical, simple, and rewarding way to do it. The inherent pendular stability of a paraglider, makes it one of the safest and easiest aircraft to fly. When folded, it can easily: fit in the trunk of your car, on the back of your cargo bike or motorbike, on your back for a hike, or be checked-in as luggage on an aero

plane. An average rig weighs 45lbs, and the lightest setup currently available weighs less than 20lbs and all fits into something the size of a daypack (you could likely take it as "carry-on" baggage! Despite being the lightest, most portable, and stable aircraft you can fly, paragliders are capable of acrobatics and efficient soaring. A skilled pilot can stay aloft for hours at a time and travel long distances. The current distance record is approximately 500km. The most important and rewarding aspect of learning to fly a paraglider is the knowledge gained over the course of your flying career concerning air dynamics. This understanding of the sky not only lets you fly most safely, but adds an entirely new dimension to your understanding of the powerful forces at work on our planet: forces we can harness and make use of for fun and energy.

We can help you acheive your flying dreams

We've been towing up from the beach and flying over the West Arm of Kootenay Lake as often as possible between T-Storms and Firefighting aircraft. The intensity of emergency air traffic is calming now as crews are winning their battles with the local wildfires.

Big thanks to all the wildfire firefighters both on the ground and in the air!

We are currently logging hours on our new boat-mounted payout winch to ensure a seamless operation this summer.

Tandem flights will be available to the public starting the second week of July. An HPAC Certified Tandem Pilot/Instructor will accompany you on an instructional flight high above West Arm of Kootenay Lake: taking in the incredible views while learning about the thrilling sport of paragliding.

Your pilot can make your experience as serene or adrenaline-pumping as you'd like during the glide back down from altitude. Either way, the open cockpit and motor-less flight make your experience the closest you can get to flying without any aircraft at all.

Prices start at $165CAD for a trip starting from the beach: towed up to 2000feet, unhooking from the towline, and free-flying back down to the start point. Higher flights to 2500ft, 3000ft, and 3500ft are available by request and additional cost.

It may look a little like parasailing at first, but even our lowest tows are 1500ft higher than high parasailing tows. Coupled with the fact that we unhook from the towline at altitude and have a certified pilot flying the glider: this is like Parasailing on steroids!
