When the Mariners take the court on Friday, October 22 at VIU Gym, they will be raising funds to remember a special player and person.
"Jonah Shankar was someone who was known for his intellect, sense of humour and his work ethic. He was a long time camp attendee with a promising future that was cut short. As we raise funds on October 22, we will be doing so with Jonah on our minds". - ππππππ ππππ (VIU Mens Basketball Assistant Coach)
We are honored to have Jonah's family in attendance for the games.
"Jonah was a talented local high school basketball player and athlete who tragically died this year after a three year battle with brain cancer. In memory of Jonah, a trust is being created to support athletes and students achieve their athletic and academic dreams. In support of Jonah's vision to "Play Hard, Fight Hard, and Never Give Up"
"Jonah's family is extremely grateful for the support of the basketball community during his fight with cancer and the continued support of the VIU Men's Basketball Team. Please come out and support your Mariners!" - πππππ πππππππ (Jonah's Father)
In watching Jonah through his high school years, many current and former Mariners have had the opportunity to compete against Jonah.
"It is impossible to forget playing against Jonah. He was a tremendous competitor yet he played with radiant joy. After a game , win or lose, Jonah would shake your hand and offer a smile in a way that epitomized sportsmanship. He left a mark on all fortunate enough to meet him and reminds me of how the game is meant to be played" - ππππππππ πππππππ (VIU Mens Basketball Player)
Though Jonah's time with us was cut short, his impact and legacy will live on forever.
"I met Jonah when he was a youngster entering high school. Basketball connected us and kept us in touch over his high school years. Not only could Jonah hoop but he was kind, respectful, and had that big bright smile that runs through the Shankar family. It is an honour to have known Jonah Shankar. On October 22nd, it will be a pleasure to celebrate and pay our respects to him on behalf of the VIU Mariners and the island basketball community. " - ππππ πππππππππ (VIU Mens Basketball Head Coach)
