Shima Karate School

Shima Karate School This page is to provide Shima students and parents up to the minute information about upcoming events This is a Shima Black Belt.

Karate is fun and exciting way to improve your life, and there are many positive benefits to practicing this honored art! Karate is taught in a dojo (the word “do” means way, road, or path and the word “jo” means place. Therefore, the place of the way is the dojo) which is a place of honor and respect. At Shima we are not trying to make a 9 year old Super Black Belt. Due to developmental stages ki

ds that age are usually not physically ready and are definitely not mentally ready to be a black belt. Our goal at Shima is to develop a child over the long run to be an outstanding teen with integrity and a sense self worth and of personal goals. They will be ready if they train on a regular basis to grade for their Black Belts when they are between 14 and 16 years of age. This will create a strong, confident person who does not bow to peer pressure and understands what it takes to succeed at anything they wish to do. They will appreciate through personal experience the rewards of hard work and perseverance. This student will be ready to make their life their own with an understanding that they can do anything they want in life.

Japan Update!

As of today, the event is officially over. If you are in our parents' Facebook group, you have seen small updates.

After 3 days of hard work, Team Canada walked away with a handful of medals. No one from Shima got a medal this time, but we had amazing matches and some very close contenders.

Senpai Oliver and Damion both made it to a bronze medal match, and although we didn't have our desired outcomes, being 5th best in the world is a pretty good finish.

It has been such an honor working with these athletes on the dojo tournament team for the last few years to see all their hard work pay off on the tatami here in japan. It was amazing.

Everyone performed amazingly, and I know that the memories and experience the kids have gained here will serve them greatly in the years of training to come.

At this point, I invite anyone who is interested in an experience like this to ask me about tournament classes on Saturdays. We will be working hard toward not just local tournaments but the 2029 world championships in Budapest Hungary!

I'll be sharing more photos from our trip as we get closer to home. I look forward to seeing everyone next week on the floor as we prepare for another great year.

See you soon.
Richard sensei.

Hello everyone,

Time time make our online pages more active again!
We're thrilled to kick off our new community initiative with a food drive dedicated to supporting local families in need. This is more than just a call for donations—it's a celebration of our community's spirit and compassion. Join us in making a tangible difference. Whether it's a can of soup or a box of pasta, every contribution matters.

Donation bins will be set out at the dojo so all you have to do is send the kids in with the items to put in the bins. Even if you're not a current member if you would like to contribute please feel free to if you were here for 10 weeks or 10 years you have still been part of the Shima family!

Travel well everyone.
Richard Sensei.
