We are saddened to hear of the passing of Matt MacGrath this morning.

Matt was a champion in every way. He touched the lives of many people, myself and Taylor included, and was a true pioneer of the Martial Arts community here on PEI.

He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts!!

In Prince Edward Island’s tight-knit combat sports community, few names carry the weight of Matt MacGrath. A longtime wrestling and jiu-jitsu coach, MacGrath has built a reputation for developing disciplined, technically sound athletes while instilling a deep respect for the traditions of both sports. His influence extends well beyond medals and match results, shaping generations of Islanders who credit his mentorship for their success on the mat and in life.

Under my leadership, our PC government is committed to developing a safe and regulated environment for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as a key pillar of youth sport. Recognizing its positive influence on young citizens, the government has developed a new legislative framework, the Combative Sport Commissioner Act, to ensure rigorous safety oversight and standardized training for amateur events. MMA's popularity has surged among young people in recent years. The sport embraces physical fitness, resilience, discipline and a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
