5 Simple Truths of Leadership: Thoughts
There is much said, thought, and left unspoken about leadership. Some think it is about barking orders; others about some mystical quality that only a few can achieve. Dean Crisp takes us through some of the attributes of good leadership. Perhaps, more importantly, he provides a system that we can all use to hone or better our leadership skills. After all, the author explains, “Leadership is not about perfection; it is about progress—deliberate, meaningful progress.”
“Leadership is not about perfection; it is about progress…”
Yes, there is hope for the rest of us. You see, leadership is not about status, title, nor even position. It is about character, action, and attitude – towards problems and most importantly towards others. Crisp proposes “Five Simple Truths” to help us all become better and more effective leaders:
1. Direction– Knowing where you’re headed. Without it, you’re simply drifting.
2. Intentionality– Acting with purpose and making deliberate choices that align with your goals.
3. Teams – Building strong relationships and surrounding yourself with people who believe in the mission.
4. Standards – Holding yourself and others to a high level of excellence.
5. Getting Ahead of Your Day – Preparing, planning, and starting each day with clarity and purpose.
Of course, achieving and implementing this system will not be easy. There will be distractions, naysayers, and obstacles. It might be useful to ask yourself, now, and along the way these simple questions:
• Are my actions aligned with my values and vision?
• Am I intentional in my decisions and leadership approach?
• Do I prioritize relationships and the development of those I lead?
• Have I set and communicated the high standards necessary for excellence?
• Am I proactive, or am I allowing the day to dictate my leadership?
For you see, to achieve success, you don’t just want to be okay, you want to strive to be excellent and in fact, even elite. After all, true leadership is more than just about your success. It is about lifting others, cultivating an environment of excellence where others can learn, succeed, and grow. It is about creating “a legacy that inspires future generations.”
