Every athletic quality a goaltender needs is built on a foundation of strength. Without it, everything else has a ceiling.

But strength without mobility is a ceiling, not a foundation. Build both. Protect both.

FTC Tuesday Tip: Feet - The #2 Anatomical Asset

The feet are the goalie’s number two anatomical asset.

Naturally, the feet are the goalie’s transport and drive their positional game.

Efficiency on the feet means efficiency in the crease. But… the feet represent much much more than just skating and movement.

The feet drive the goalie’s reactivity. Patient feet are fundamental to reactive ability.

With patience on the feet, the goalie has all of their major muscle groups available to support their needs – glutes, hamstrings, quads, and more.

On the feet, a goalie has a full toolbox to driving both preparation and reactivity… this allows the goaltender to deliver save support to both their interior and exterior.

Your subconscious doesn't know the word "don't."

When a coach says "don't let in the first one," your brain hears "let in the first one." When you tell yourself "don't let in the next one," guess what gets planted in your head?

Stop talking in negatives. Start talking in what you WANT.

The words you use shape the images in your mind. Make sure those images are working for you, not against you.

FTC Tuesday Tip: #1 Anatomical Asset

The eyes are the goalie’s number one anatomical asset.

Much of what a goalie executes technically, as its underlying aim, should be to deliver quality visuals.

Information is king and only the eyes can deliver information. Therefore, quality reads can only be achieved by unleashing the power of the eyes.

This is why technical competency and positional efficiency/economy are important. It is the goalie’s technical engine.

A high-end technical engine delivers, as a byproduct, high-end visuals.

So, goalies need to do the work, have superb attention to detail, and polish their engine so they can graduate from a physical game to a visual game.

Average athletes avoid pressure. Elite athletes chase it.

The best goalies don't hope the play stays at the other end. They crave the turnover. They want the puck coming up ice toward them.

Pressure isn't real. It's a movie and sound in your head. Change the narrative, and you become unstoppable.

F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real.

Face it. Embrace it. Crave it.

This is the mindset that separates good goalies from great ones. Start building yours in the FTC app. 👇

Mobility gives goalies access to positions. Strength gives them the ability to control those positions. Both are non-negotiable.

FTC Tuesday Tip: Lateral Touch

The term lateral touch refers to a goalie’s ability to deliver the right amount of lateral distance the moment demands.

Goalies that lack lateral touch tend to overflow and overplay many situations because of too much distance.

Goalies must have power, but they must also have finesse. This balance applies to lateral movement to consistently deliver powerful, center-net positions.

When training lateral technique – especially the butterfly slide – the goalie wants to train different distances to ensure that lateral touch is established in their game.

Here’s the rule of thumb. All butterfly slides have the same technique, regardless of distance, it is the power applied to the push that determines the distance traveled.

As noted, goalies want to be effective covering big distance where explosiveness is required. At the same time, they want to be accurate in covering smaller distances when finesse is needed.

Episode 2 of FTC Impact is live on Inside Edge. 🎬

Curtis McElhinney, former NHL goaltender and current Director of Goaltending with the Toronto Maple Leafs, breaks down why every goaltender needs a personalized system of play, and why the game’s continued evolution demands it.

“There’s not one set way, but there is still an importance in designing that system unique to each goaltender that will allow them to have success.”
