Rocky Mountain Rescue safe winching/self recovery training.

Its been brought to my attention that the use of a wood block under a factory or bottle jack is unsafe and that I'm portraying something unsafe. Thats just not true. I lift millions of dollars worth of equipment on a daily basis for a living with a 10,000 PSI cylinder jack using the correct wood blocking to compensate for jack height and I've adapted and downsized that technique to teach in my off road tire clinics. I'm here to tell you that a lot of our training is about using what you have not what you wished you had and this is no different. Yes we have a Hi Lift Jack base that could have been used but that only covers some of the wheeling community as not everyone has one or can afford it either but everyone can get free access to a small piece of hardwood chunk of wood.

I felt compelled to make two videos showing a bottle jack and a HI LIFT JACK on a block of wood to show as a stability test/demo for everyone to see for themselves.

** For the Hi Lift segment the lift mate was used but can't be seen in the video***

Carrie showed me a post about someone requiring a tow truck because of a flat, broken valve stem. Owner said factory jack won't lift their new gladiator with bigger tires.

A factory jack is still useful even with a lifted rig. A simple block of wood to compensate for the lift will be the answer, no tow truck needed.

Today during our Hi Lift Jack safety and advanced rigging clinic we were able to demonstrate our version of closed loop rigging with the Hi Lift Jack Off Road Kit.

To my knowledge this has not been demonstrated before and our end game with this is to provide a "less lethal" rigging system by eliminating the open loop grab hooks in favor of locking grab hooks. This also eliminates the stabbing cotter pin of open loop grab hooks. The main chain of this system will also need to have the same locking grab hooks to complete the closed loop.

More pics to follow.

This application really grinds my gears, why put an underrated open loop FIXED clevis pin hook on a synthetic winch line rated at 16,000MBS. You just made the steel hook component the weakest point of the application, in the event of breakage that steel component becomes a lethal projectile. This winch is a Warn M15 and has the power to break that 2ton wll hook like it was made from clothes hanger. If you have this set up it would be advisable to cut that hook off in favour of a less lethal projectile like a soft shackle or thimble.

Here's some video literature to back up why I do not trust or use clevis hooks.

Now that the season is changing i would like people to know that Rocky Mountain Rescue events run R.S.S. Rain Sleet or Snow. So if you sign up for any of our training please dress accordingly and if you have pop up gazeebo or propane fire pit you are encouraged to bring them for your own creature comfort.
