MEN'S 50KM RESULTS: The race at the front of the 50km was spicy off the start in the heat of the evening sun, with Joe Stewart of Halifax setting a blazing fast pace for the first loop (41:01 split = 4:06/km) and Cody Cooper of Saint John hot on his heels (41:02 split time). By the end of the second lap, Cody had taken the lead and maintained it until the end — finishing in well under 4 hours. Lincoln Esau, originally from the area and visiting home from Norway, was just a few minutes behind in third place on the first few laps and climbed to second place by the end of lap four. Joe rounded out the podium with a strong finish, securing Nova Scotia representation on both the men's and the women's top three in the 50km race this year.

The top five finisher’s in the men's race:
🥇 Cody Cooper - 3:50:02
🥈 Lincoln Esau - 4:12:55
🥉 Joe Stewart - 4:35:36
4️⃣ Drew Wallace - 5:49:56
5️⃣ Adam Tremblay - 7:08:19

All of the 50km runners this year demonstrated resilience, and by all accounts they enjoyed the challenge of running from daylight into the darkness. A special shoutout to fellow race director, Kurt Gumushel, the final male finisher of the 50km in just over 9 hours. Also to brothers Desmond and Michael Simon, the final athletes on the course, who DNFd after loop four but completed 40km together and had an incredible attitude throughout. Thanks for showing us all what's possible when you are willing to try!

63% of the field in the 50km solo were women!!! And ALL of them finished.

The women in this race showed up with strength, curiosity, and a readiness to adapt to whatever challenges came their way. From the steady speed at the front of the race to first ultras and personal bests, there was a lot to celebrate in the early hours of Sunday morning. Congratulations to all of these incredible athletes!

Running is a team sport! The 60km relay teams at Mines to Pines took turns heading out for loops on Saturday through the evening and into the dark. Between laps, they cheered on other runners, hung around the campfire, and brought the energy to the Tiny Trails basecamp.

Congrats to all relay teams, and kudos to the top three teams overall who went home with prizes from our local sponsors Endeavours & ThinkPlay, Backtrails by Radical Edge, Fredericton’s Country Co-Op Farm Store, and Lulujo:

🥇Fredericton Tail Runners (Alex Smith, Emily Prystupa, Mike Kowalski) — 5:12:48
🥈Twins (Jerry Pugh and Mark Scott) — 7:08:58
🥉Dragon Chasers (Charlene Boudreau and Kristin Gough) — 7:21:25

Big kudos to everyone who took part in the relay division for this year's Mines to Pines. We hope to see you back next year!

We love seeing your photos of these pine trees — part of the Mines to Pines finisher’s gift — planted in their new homes. It felt fitting for everyone at the first edition of this trail race to go home with a pine tree to plant and care for. Mixed pine tree forests growing in the former Minto coal mining site remind us of the resilience of living things, and reflect a landscape in transition — from mines to pines.

Thanks to our friends at BackTrails, everyone who sends us a photo of their planted tree will be entered to win a pair of Oboz boots for your next outdoor adventures.

Two ways to enter:
1. Share a photo of your planted trees on social media and tag the Mines to Pines account so we see it.
2. Send us an email ([email protected]) with a photo of your planted trees.

The deadline to enter is Saturday, August 1st (but the sooner you can get your trees in the ground, the better chance of success!). We have a few extra trees left if you missed out on getting one at the finish line!

Thank you to the Kingsclear Tree Nursery for providing two trees for each participant and volunteer: a taller red pine tree and a smaller jack pine tree.

We're also compiling a "community photos" album; send us your favourite pictures from the weekend to [email protected] and we'll add yours to it. Don't forget to share a photo of your finish line tree planted in the ground to be entered to win a pair of Oboz boots, thanks to our friends at Backtrails by the Radical Edge 🌲
