Late season rides are my favourite, but they can get pretty messy. Friendly reminder to make sure your bike is clean before you put it away for the winter! To keep your bike's wheels spinning smoothly, you'll need to service the hubs periodically. You'll know its time for service if the bearings have play (loose bearings allow the wheel to wiggle side-to-side) or if the wheel grinds as it turns (spin the wheel to see if it spins freely, and feel for vibrations through the bike frame). A loose or grindy wheel will lead to damage to the hub's internal parts. Check out the damage to the cone in the close-up picture - luckily I was able to source a replacement part so we didn't need to replace the whole wheel.
