Let’s talk honestly about youth hockey.
This sport is expensive. Ice time. Equipment. Travel. Tournaments. Skills coaches. Gas. Hotels. It adds up fast. Every parent in this game feels it.
So when I say it’s your child’s journey, I’m not ignoring the fact that it’s your money.
When we commit financially, there is absolutely a level of accountability that comes with that. If we are paying for private training, strength programs, skating coaches, mental performance sessions, then effort is not optional. Commitment is not optional. Showing up ready is not optional.
Away from the rink, you can absolutely do things your way. Structure. Discipline. Standards. That is parenting.
But when the puck drops and they step on the ice?
It’s their game.
It’s the coach’s job to coach.
It’s the ref’s job to ref.
It’s your job to be a parent.
Support them. Let them compete. Let them fail. Let them learn.
Hold the standard off the ice.
Protect the love of the game on the ice.
If we mix those two up, we risk turning development into pressure and passion into resentment.
There are many paths in this sport. House league with friends can build just as much character as elite travel hockey. What matters most is that they still love the game five years from now.
