Emergency first responders took to the ice inside the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena in Merritt over the weekend, where shootouts, overtime, and shift work was all part of raising much needed funds. An estimated 175 hockey players on 14 teams, mainly consisting of frontline first responders, geared up to raise money for sick kids.
A dedicated planning team comprised of law enforcement officers from the Merritt RCMP Detachment, RCMP Central Interior Traffic Services (CITS - Merritt), RCMP Southeast District Major Crime and even Whitehorse RCMP along with their friends, family and local community members worked tirelessly to pull together this year’s charity competition. Since its inception this annual fundraising initiative is responsible for raising over $100,000 to support children and families who rely on the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
The South Okanagan RCMP team took the top spot during this year’s Law Enforcement Charity Hockey Challenge, however the real winners were kids across the province.
