About The Old Homestead
The Old Homestead Upland Pheasant Preserve at its infancy started in the early 1970’s when Don purchased an incubator and eggs from a local farmer who had an aviary. As time passed, the pheasant numbers grew as so did his passion for upland hunting.
After attending a local Springer spaniel field trial, Larry who was only 13 years old at the time saw the advantage of having a bird dog in order to be successful in pheasant hunting. A few weeks later, his father bought him his first bird dog. With help from local dog trainers and reading several books on the subject, Larry’s knowledge and love for bird dogs grew over the years. By amalgamating both passions, this created the perfect combination to start an upland pheasant preserve.
Soon after, Don and Larry decided to host a pheasant hunt for family and friends. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, they expanded by hosting hunts for the public on Don’s father’s homestead. However, due to the vicinity of the neighboring farms, they decided to move to a more remote location. After a long and extensive search, they finally found a property with 320 acres of mixture of brush, field, food plots and several beaver ponds which created a perfect cover and habitat for wing shooting.
