A year ago, mother and son duo, Heidi and Jevin, passed their black belt test. This week, they got their first-degree black belt! 🥋

That year was a big deal. They kept coming to class, even on the hard days. They helped new students. They showed that their black belt was earned, not just given.

The best part? They did it together.

There are not many things a parent and kid can do side by side. You can coach soccer, but you can’t play in the game. You can cheer at baseball, but you can’t go on the field. At Curran’s Karate, you’re on the mat together. You learn the same moves and earn the same belts.

Here’s why we love it when families train together:

You spend time together with no phones.
Kids see their parents work hard and try again when things are tough.
Parents get to learn something new, just like their kids.
You cheer each other on, in class and at home.
Heidi and Jevin, great job! We are so proud of you both. 👊

“Will this make my kid more aggressive?”

It’s a fair question, and honestly, we love getting it, because the answer surprises almost every parent who asks.

The opposite tends to happen. Kids who don’t feel sure of themselves are usually the ones who either shrink away from every conflict or overreact to prove something. But the kids who’ve spent real time training, who know exactly what they’re capable of if they ever truly needed it? They’re usually the calmest kids in the room. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone, including themselves.

Confidence that comes from actually being capable is quiet. It doesn’t posture. It doesn’t need an audience. We’ve watched dozens of kids come in loud and looking for attention, and leave months later just... settled. Not because we taught them to fight. Because we taught them they probably won’t need to.

Agressive children come from fear, fear comes from lack of self-esteem and confidence.

At Curran’s Karate we practice confidence every class (how else are you going to get better at it).

Where does your child PRACTICE confidence? It doesn’t just happen confidence is a trained skill.

A message from my friend Christine took me back about 13-14 years, to when her daughter Tessa had just started karate. She was five years old, and one of the very first things we drill into new students is how to fall properly — it’s called a “break fall” in martial arts, because... well, it breaks your fall. Very on the nose, I know.

So we’d been practicing this in class. Tucking the chin, rolling with it, not putting a hand out to catch yourself like your instincts scream at you to do.

Cut to: the water park. Tessa’s sitting in one of those foldable chairs, and it tips backward. No warning, no time to think.

And she just... break falls. Tucks her head, rolls with it, pops back up totally fine.

Five years old and her body already knew what to do before her brain caught up. THAT’S self-defense.

Because self-defense isn’t just about blocking punches or handling a bully on the playground. Sometimes it’s about learning how to deal with concrete — instead of letting concrete deal with you.
