“Will this make my kid more aggressive?”

It’s a fair question, and honestly, we love getting it, because the answer surprises almost every parent who asks.

The opposite tends to happen. Kids who don’t feel sure of themselves are usually the ones who either shrink away from every conflict or overreact to prove something. But the kids who’ve spent real time training, who know exactly what they’re capable of if they ever truly needed it? They’re usually the calmest kids in the room. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone, including themselves.

Confidence that comes from actually being capable is quiet. It doesn’t posture. It doesn’t need an audience. We’ve watched dozens of kids come in loud and looking for attention, and leave months later just... settled. Not because we taught them to fight. Because we taught them they probably won’t need to.

Agressive children come from fear, fear comes from lack of self-esteem and confidence.

At Curran’s Karate we practice confidence every class (how else are you going to get better at it).

Where does your child PRACTICE confidence? It doesn’t just happen confidence is a trained skill.

A message from my friend Christine took me back about 13-14 years, to when her daughter Tessa had just started karate. She was five years old, and one of the very first things we drill into new students is how to fall properly — it’s called a “break fall” in martial arts, because... well, it breaks your fall. Very on the nose, I know.

So we’d been practicing this in class. Tucking the chin, rolling with it, not putting a hand out to catch yourself like your instincts scream at you to do.

Cut to: the water park. Tessa’s sitting in one of those foldable chairs, and it tips backward. No warning, no time to think.

And she just... break falls. Tucks her head, rolls with it, pops back up totally fine.

Five years old and her body already knew what to do before her brain caught up. THAT’S self-defense.

Because self-defense isn’t just about blocking punches or handling a bully on the playground. Sometimes it’s about learning how to deal with concrete — instead of letting concrete deal with you.

A few years ago a mom pulled me aside after class and said something I haven’t stopped thinking about.

“My daughter used to whisper. Like, actually whisper, even at home. Last night at the restaurant, she looked the server dead in the eye and ordered her own food. Out loud. No prompting. I almost cried into my breadsticks.”

Here’s the thing — we didn’t teach her daughter to order food. We didn’t even talk about restaurants. What we did was give her hundreds of small moments where she had to speak up, hold her stance, and be seen. Say her count out loud. Ask a question in front of the class. Bow in, say her name, mean it.

Confidence isn’t a switch that flips. It’s a rep you do so many times it stops feeling like a rep at all. And then one day it just... shows up. At a restaurant. In a classroom. On a playground.

That’s the part of karate nobody puts on the trophy shelf, but it’s the part that matters most. 🥋

Mid-class, a 7-year-old raised his hand — not to ask about kicks or belts, but this:

“Wait, is this why I’m not losing my pencil anymore?”

I had to stop and ask him to explain. Turns out, at the start of every class we have the kids find their spot on the mat, put their gear exactly where it belongs, and check it before we bow in. Every single class. Same routine. No exceptions.

Apparently that habit followed him home. His backpack is organized now. His pencil case has a spot. His mom didn’t ask us to teach that — it just happened, because discipline isn’t really about karate moves. It’s about practicing “doing the small thing right, every time” until your brain doesn’t know how to do it any other way anymore.

We think we’re teaching kids how to block a punch. Turns out we’re also teaching them how to keep track of a pencil. We’ll take it. 📝

Last week, a mom brought her daughter in for her very first karate class.

Before we even got started, she asked me something I get a lot: “Why don’t you just put her straight into class with the other kids?”

Great question. Here’s why we don’t.

Before any child steps onto the mat with the group, we sit down with them one-on-one. We talk, we play, we watch how they move and how they respond. We’re not just teaching a kick or a punch in that first session — we’re building trust. We’re figuring out what actually makes this kid tick.

Because every child is different. Some need structure right away. Some need to laugh first and learn second. Some are quiet until they feel safe, and then they don’t stop talking. We can’t know any of that from a five-minute drop-off.

We even go a step further — looking at the other kids already in our programs and thinking about who this child might really click with. Who they’d push each other to improve with. Who they’d actually want to come back and see next week.

The mom kind of paused and said, “Wow, I didn’t realize you put that much thought into it.”

Then she laughed and said, “Wouldn’t it just be easier to chuck them into a class?”

Honestly? Yeah. It would be easier.

But easier isn’t what matters. What’s best for the child is what matters.

It takes a little more time up front. But it’s worth it — because like we always say around here:

When we slow down, we go faster.

It’s day 12 of summer break and your kid has already said “I’m bored” approximately 47 times. We hear you, Maple Ridge parents. We see you.

Here’s the thing — structure isn’t just good for kids. It’s good for parent sanity. A kid with somewhere to be, something to work toward, and someone besides you to answer to? That’s not just an afternoon off your plate. That’s peace.

And bonus: kids who keep some structure through the summer tend to slide back into the school routine a whole lot easier come September. Less “back to school meltdown,” more “I got this.”
