⛳ Choosing the Right Tees for Your Round: Play the Game, Don't Fight the Course!
One of the most common questions on the tee box is: "Which set of tees should I play from today?"
Selecting the right teeing area isn't just about making the round enjoyable—it’s about playing golf the way the course architect intended, maintaining a great pace of play, and giving yourself the best chance to post a solid score.
Here are a few quick guidelines to help you pick the right tees for your next casual round:
1. Leave Age and Gender at the Clubhouse Door
There is no rule in golf that states your age or gender dictates where you must tee off. Playing from a specific set of tees isn’t an inherited right or a mandatory requirement based on who you are.
Golf is about distance, consistency, and skill—not demographics! Whether you’re 18 or 70, male or female, the best tee box for you is the one that matches your current driving distance and skill level.
2. Skill & Distance Beat Ego (The Pro vs. Amateur Example)
Consider this: A senior male tour professional (over age 50) or a top LPGA professional hits the ball with incredible accuracy and carry distance. In a casual round, either of them would naturally play from tee boxes much further back than a younger male amateur golfer who might hit the ball 190 yards with a slice.
Just because someone is young doesn't mean they belong on the back tees, and just because someone is a senior or female doesn't mean they belong on the front tees. Play where your game shines!
3. How Tees Affect Your Course Handicap & Slope
Ever wondered why your Handicap Index adjusts when you move between tee boxes?
Course Rating measures the difficulty of the course for a scratch golfer.
Slope Rating measures the relative difficulty for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer.
When you move to a longer or more challenging set of tees, the Course Rating and Slope increase, which gives you more handicap strokes for the round. Conversely, moving up to a shorter set of tees lowers the rating and slope, giving you fewer strokes. The World Handicap System is designed so that your net score remains fair and comparable, no matter which tees you choose!
📌 A Quick Note on Club Tournaments
For recreational play, tee selection is completely up to you and your group. However, during official club tournaments and events, tee assignments are determined strictly by the Organizing Committee.
Event committees set specific teeing areas based on division, flight, age brackets, or handicap cut-offs to ensure a level playing field for the entire field. Discretion rests entirely with the committee, so be sure to check the event scorecard or rules sheet prior to your tee time!
Bottom line: Golf is far more fun when you're hitting mid-irons into greens instead of long irons and woods all day. Next time you step up to the first tee, pick the distance that lets you enjoy the game!
