Big Gully Farm www.biggullyfarm.com The herd comprises Hereford, Polled Hereford and Angus females that run on native grass on the hills surrounding "Big Gully" Creek.

Breeding Registered Herefords since 1967, Big Gully Farm is located north of Maidstone, SK and operated by the 4th generation of the Leachman family. Primary focus of the farm is raising commercial bulls for stockman that capitalize on the structural correctness, docility, efficiency, and hardiness that the breed offers their crossbreeding scenarios. An annual bull sale is hosted the second Thursd

ay of December with both yearling and two-year old bulls offered. The herd is predicated on exceptional structure, muscle, intermediate frame, udder quality, center body dimension and fleshing ability. Along with visual distinction, we are deeply committed to genetic advancement with genomic-enhanced EPD's on the entire herd and each sale bull. Moreover, all yearling cattle are ultrasounded by Shari for carcass merit each spring. Artificial Insemination is heavily utilized on all replacements and the cowherd for one cycle. A strong collection of herd bulls assembled from professional, progressive and information motivated operations across North America is then utilized post-AI. We are always glad to host anyone with an interest in viewing the cowherd and developing a first hand opinion of the cattle and their development.

This morning-it was a bit surprising to see our dogs, Rip and Riggs, parked at the base of a tree and barking up in the air. Didn’t take long to see this black bear waiting for them to clear out of the way.

🎟️APPRECIATION EVENT UPDATE: We are fortunate that Kaylee Chizawsky from Zoetis has agreed to present on both ‘Implant Strategies for Calves’ and ‘Proper Vaccine Handling’ at 4:15 PM. We invite each of you to consider attending this Sunday, August 23rd-beginning at 3 PM MT. We will have bull calf pairs, heifer calf pairs and bred heifers on display to start. We were fortunate to have Scott McClelland of Forty Mile Livestock at Maidstone, SK develop our replacement heifers this past winter and spring, following another dry year in '25. He was great to work with in allowing us to synchronize and breed, then subsequently turn out a natural sire-at his facility. We will intend to have a majority of them on display during our 12th BGF Appreciation Event coming up on Sunday, August 23rd at 3 PM MT. Please feel welcome to come for the afternoon and supper.

This past week, we had a great trip to the Canadian Junior Hereford Bonanza for board meetings in Drummondville and the junior show itself in Richmond. The Quebec organizing committee, along with the contributions of many others, put together an impressively well attended show with a fun and relaxed atmosphere on the rural fairgrounds outside Richmond.

On Friday and Saturday, we took a side trip south to western Vermont where we visited a classmate and roomate from graduate school at Virginia Tech. It was great to catch up with him, after many years, while being able to see where he and his family now reside. We toured around the east side of Lake Champlain in rural Vermont, had supper at the Red Mill Restaurant and stayed in South Burlington on Friday night. Saturday morning we took a ferry across the south part of the lake into New York state. We drove through the Adirondack range on the west side of the lake-before returning to Quebec and flying home from Montreal.

Glad to see the junior association members have a great week with their families and friends, while being able to visit with several of those breeders in attendance as well.

Please feel welcome to join us on Sunday, August 23rd for our 12th Annual Big Gully Farm Appreciation Event. The afternoon will begin at 3 pm MT with bull calf pairs, heifer calf pairs, bred heifers and herd bulls on display. An educational presentation will follow and a smoked brisket/pulled pork supper begins at 5 pm MT.

Please be sure to bring your family, friends or neighbours for an afternoon away of socializing, food and evaluating cattle.

We really wanted to make sure we could take in the 250th birthday of America. The first night of our trip was a couple hours of private fireworks in Butte, MT-followed by the city finale on the mountain above Montana Tech. Listened to the President’s address, from Mt. Rushmore, as we drove into town.

After a welcome rain, last night we toured this group of polled cows for the first time since being turned out on this pasture.

Corn is seeded for grazing winter 2026/spring 2027. Thanks to Kyle Newsted of Maidstone for floating fertilizer and One29 Ag Services Ltd of Neilburg for high-speed tillage and seeding. We chose to pause about a week to simplify management here while one of us was away. Cows were removed from grazing the residue about 4 days ago. We are curious to see how each of the 3 hybrid varieties develop and what conditions the growing season provides us. Grazing corn has become the overwhelming proportion of our winter feed for pregnant cows and pairs, while having treated us very well during the many consecutive years of droughty conditions recently.

The 2026 Beef Improvement Federation Symposium in Boise, Idaho was an excellent and informative event with great speakers, topics and hospitality. A valuable opportunity to meet new folks, while visiting friends and mentors involved with genetic advancement of beef cattle. A broad and substantial rain occurred on the trip down through Alberta and Montana, already appearing to make a noticeable difference on the way home. It was also enjoyable touring an operation that has made a sizeable impact on our own herd for many years.
