It was a beautiful morning with blue skies, a glassy lake and pea green viz.

Congratulations to Jake for completing his drysuit certification in less than ideal conditions. (Below the water anyway…above you couldn’t ask for better.)

Flower Garden
West Hawk Lake, Manitoba

Another exploratory boat dive.

We were more confident on our location with this one and landed right on it. Dropping down to about 60’ there is a large underwater grotto, extending a good 20 feet deep into the undercut in the rock. Found a little gnome band perched on a ledge. A cherub and more vintage pop bottles.

The dive site description mentions freshwater sponges, but…. A) we didn’t really know what to look for, and…. B) we’re not sure if they’re around all year or not. Anyway, not sure on the sponges, but we did find an intact old wooden boat down around 70’ that wasn’t on the dive site description, so that was a treat.

Another beautiful dive in beautiful surroundings with the orange lichen covered rock cliffs near by.

Mariah Caves
West Hawk Lake, Manitoba

Upon exiting the water after this dive, I exclaimed it was my favourite West Hawk dive in 5 years.

Perhaps due to the exploration factor. We had never dove here before, we didn’t know what to expect, and we didn’t particularly know exactly where it was.

Thank Poseidon for side scan sonar. As we cruised along the shore, we we found an instant drop off from 35ish feet, down to 90, then down to 160’. It was our best bet, so we anchored in the 35 and hopped in the water.

Mariah is the local term for Burbot. And you know how much we love Burbot, so the prospect of finding “caves” full of them was too much for us to pass up.

After a short swim, we found ourselves on the edge of a sheer cliff. Straight down. At the base of the cliff, in about 75-80’ we found several undercuts in the rock, some about 10-15 feet deep. After exploring the base of the wall, we turned deeper, but turned back around 110’ after not finding anything remarkable. After some time returning to explore the “caves” at the base of the wall once again, we were approaching our NDL and began our ascent up the wall. A swimming safety stop took us past interesting underwater structures built to support cabin docks.

Alas, we didn’t spot any Mariah/Burbot on this dive, but we did find the undercuts known as the caves. We also found a few stubby beer bottles and an 80 year old Coca-Cola bottle. 🤙

The pic of the cabins is from our anchor spot. From there, swim parallel to shore to the right and you’ll soon find the edge of the cliff.

Cat’s Ass Beach
West Hawk Lake, Manitoba

The most popular dive site on the most popular dive lake in Manitoba.

Within the campground area, this site is an easy shore access dive protected by perimeter buoys to keep boat traffic out.

It’s not so much a beach but rather small rock outcropping which gives you access to depth right away via sheer walls and steep dropoffs.

There are multiple platforms at various depths which makes it ideal for training.

There is much to explore in the site. Besides the natural beauty of the sheer rock walls and quartz veins, there are many placed artifacts. Boats, satellite dish, windmill, gnome gardens, a fire helmet, police car, bathtub and treasure chest just to name a few.

There used to be a clever “flip me over” stone on one of the platforms, but it wasn’t in its normal place this trip. And all that remains of our buddy the skeleton are his shin bones and fins.

We visit in May, and the water temp is 4C, so drysuits are a must. But the trade off is viz up to 40-50’.

If you’ve dove this site, let us know your favourite feature! 👇

Our team took advantage of the beautiful weather and headed out to the lake with the early morning fog to get some Public Safety Diving training reps in.

Tying knots underwater isn’t just about the knots. It’s about being able to accomplish a task in little to no viz, cold water and bulky dry gloves, all while remembering everything else you need to remember when you’re under water.

We got some search and recovery reps in, diver emergencies, mask removals, entanglements and cutting tools, witness interviews, supervisor responsibilities and report writing.

I forgot where I first heard it, but I often repeat it…. When asked how to get comfortable and confident diving and working in zero visibility, I always respond, “practice a lot in ALMOST zero visibility.”

Search and Recovery

DiveMaster candidates must perform search and recovery scenarios. This involves utilizing various search techniques with compass patterns and search lines. They must tie knots underwater and use a lift bag to raise an object from the bottom. The goal of the lift bag isn’t to rocket the object to the surface, but to make the object neutral, so the diver may manipulate it and raise it in a slow controlled manner.

We practice in the pool and get multiple reps in before doing it all again in the lake where the difficulty is raised due to poor visibility, frigid water temperatures, and bulky gear such as dry gloves.

In the Divemaster course, there are 24 skills the candidates must perform to demonstration level quality. The mindset changes from solely being able to perform the skill, to being able to teach it to others.

We spend many many hours in the pool. Practice, practice, practice. We’ll keep working and get more reps in until the DMCs are dialed in. Work in progress.

Opening day at Lovering.

We put the stairs in at Lovering Lake today. Locals said the ice came off 3 days ago.

No bass spotted, 1 dead burbot, and rest assured the crayfish were still there.

Divemaster training in 3’ viz and 5C water. 🤷‍♂️🤙
