Did you know that not every ADHDer or Autistic person identifies as having a disability? Some think having ADHD or Autism is like having a brain with a different way of thinking (a different neurotype, if you will). However, having these differences of experiences within an ADHD or Autism diagnosis really highlights the nuances and contradictions that accompanies these diagnoses. How we perceive the world can be how we perceive ourself and vice versa.
There are many contradictions when it comes to being an ADHDer and how those contradictions impact your life may also colour if you view having ADHD as a disability or not. We love spontaneity but really thrive when we have a routine and definitely have a hard time setting our own routine. We work better with a minimalist look to our workspaces ,but struggle to make these spaces tidy on a regular basis. Sometimes we are good with cleaning a friend’s space, but keeping our own space clean is a real challenge. One big contradiction that puzzles everyone without ADHD is that we have a hard time with keeping focused on ‘boring’ tasks, but can ‘hyperfocus’ and really lock in on activities... and lose hours and hours to chasing dopamine things like video games or TikTok.
Sometimes these contradictions can really impact someone’s life in a negative way. The good news is that there are things we can do to help minimize that impact. We can talk to a medical professional about what medication is right for us. We can find what therapist works best for us. We can seek out an ADHD Coach to help us close that gap between where we are and where we want to be.
