WHY I BELIEVE IN SPRINTING FOR MY STAGE ATHLETES 🏃‍♀️💨

As my athletes get closer to stepping on the fitness competition stage, cardio isn’t just about burning more calories.

Everything I program has a purpose.

And one tool I love when it’s appropriate for the athlete?

SPRINTS.

Here’s why:

1. We want to get lean without training the body to be slow.

Contest prep requires creating an energy deficit, but I still want my athletes training like ATHLETES.

Short, explosive sprint intervals recruit high-threshold, fast-twitch muscle fibres and give us a completely different stimulus than simply adding more and more steady-state cardio.

2. They create a huge training stimulus in very little time.

Sprint intervals are demanding.

Heart rate climbs. Oxygen demand climbs. The body has to recover between bouts.

That means I can create a powerful conditioning stimulus without automatically prescribing another 45–60 minutes on a treadmill.

And in prep, more isn’t always better. Better is better.

3. They help build the conditioning I want to see on stage.

Getting stage lean is one thing.

Being able to train hard, pose, hold your presentation and walk onto that stage looking athletic and conditioned is another.

I don’t just want a smaller athlete.

I want a conditioned athlete.

4. They can improve cardiovascular fitness and VO₂ max.

As prep progresses, maintaining cardiovascular capacity matters.

Strategically programmed high-intensity intervals can improve cardiorespiratory fitness while giving us another conditioning tool alongside steps and lower-intensity cardio.

5. They challenge glucose utilization and insulin sensitivity.

High-intensity muscular work uses glycogen quickly and can improve the muscle’s ability to take up glucose.

For a physique athlete whose carbohydrates are being strategically manipulated throughout prep, metabolic health and nutrient utilization matter.

But here’s the part people sometimes miss:

I don’t throw endless sprints at an already exhausted athlete just because we’re getting close to show day.

Sprinting is a tool, not a punishment for eating and not a shortcut to getting lean.

If recovery is suffering, legs are getting beaten up, performance is crashing or the athlete’s physique needs something different, I adjust.

Because contest prep isn’t about seeing how much cardio I can make someone survive.

It’s about applying the right stimulus, to the right athlete, at the right time - while preserving the physique we’ve spent months building.

That is why you’ll see some of my Team BOSS athletes sprinting their way toward the stage. 🔥

We aren’t just getting lean.
We’re building stage-ready athletes.

Now RUN. 😈🏃‍♀️💨 Nicole Mason

My philosophy as a coach has never been about pushing athletes to the point of breakdown just for the sake of a trophy. 🏆

A great prep coach should know how to build an athlete… but an elite coach also knows how to protect them.

Hormonal health.
Inflammation.
Recovery.
Stress management.
Digestion.
Longevity.
Mental resilience.

These things matter.

Too many athletes normalize burnout, adrenal fatigue, extreme inflammation, rebound weight gain and feeling completely destroyed after prep as “part of the sport.”

I don’t accept that.

I believe in evolving coaching methods and staying educated on tools, protocols, recovery strategies, supplementation, peptides, nutrition and training approaches that can SUPPORT the athlete through the process - not just strip them down for stage day and leave them broken after.

Because the goal shouldn’t only be to create a great physique.

The goal should be to create a strong, healthy, resilient athlete who can continue thriving long after the show is over.

That’s the standard I hold myself to as a coach. 💪❤️

WELCOME TO THE NEW TEAM BOSS COMPETITION ATHLETES PAGE 🖤🏆

A new page. The same BOSS standard.

I’m so excited to officially welcome you to the home of Team BOSS Competition Athletes - bringing together the BOSS brand, my 30 years of experience in the fitness industry….. and the incredible success our athletes have built on stage over the past five years.

Team BOSS is about so much more than getting stage lean.

It’s about building an athlete from the ground up - physically, mentally and confidently - and creating a complete package that commands attention when you step under those lights.

From your training and nutrition to your coaching, support, stage presence, poise and posing, every detail matters.

Whether you’re stepping on stage for the very first time or chasing your next level, our goal is simple:

Bring YOUR very best package to the stage.

And you don’t have to be a competition athlete to work with me.

I’ll also continue offering 1:1 personal coaching for those who simply want to train with purpose, transform their physique, become stronger, build confidence and work toward their own individual goals - no stage required.

Competition coaching. 1:1 personal coaching. One BOSS standard.

Strong. Polished. Prepared. Confident.

Welcome to TEAM BOSS.
Where athletes are built, goals are chased and your best is always the standard. 🏆

THE BOSS NAME IS RETIRING….. BUT THIS GYM IS JUST GETTING STARTED. 🖤

After a lot of years, a lot of memories, and a whole lot of sweat inside these walls…. the time has come to officially retire the BOSS Health & Fitness name as the gym moves into a new chapter with new leadership, restructuring and a complete rebrand.

So what does this mean for our BOSS members?

Honestly - very little changes for you.

You’ll continue training in the same location, with your trainers, your sessions and your classes.

But what you will start noticing is everything being added.

More classes.
More variety.
New training equipment.
New upgrades.
A fresh new look.
And a whole new energy being brought into the gym.

I’m incredibly excited to watch this transformation continue over the coming weeks.

I also want to officially welcome Brad Fowler and Jason Arnold, the guys behind the new leadership, restructuring and rebrand. Both bring years of experience in the fitness industry, along with some big ideas for what this space can become.

For me, BOSS has always been so much more than a name (and murals) on a wall. It has been the people who walked through those doors, the relationships built, the transformations, the athletes, the trainers, the laughs, the hard days, the victories and the community we created together.

And while the BOSS name at the gym is retiring, that community isn’t going anywhere.

Sometimes growth means being willing to turn the page.

And I have a feeling this next chapter is going to be a pretty damn good one.

Welcome to the next era. 🖤

Earlier this week, were you experiencing headaches, uneasiness or sudden nausea in an overcrowded room, or really seemingly for no reason at all? Sometimes even in an air-conditioned room you might experience these problems. Reason? Lack of negative ions in the room.

Don’t go by the name, there is nothing negative or unhealthy about negative ions. Negative ions are beneficial for the human body while positive ions are harmful. In fact, you will find the highest concentrations of negative ions in natural, clean air. Ions are invisible charged particles in the air – either molecules or atoms, which bear an electric charge. Some particles are positively charged and some are negatively charged. To put it simply, positive ions are molecules that have lost one or more electrons whereas negative ions are actually oxygen atoms with extra-negatively-charged electrons. Negative ions are abundant in nature, especially around waterfalls, on the ocean surf, at the beach and after a storm like yesterday.

The heavy rain we had this week helped dump a large amount of negative ions in that air.

So open up the windows or get out for a good walk and breathe in some negative ion goodness 💜🌧️☔

You don’t get your twenties back.
You don’t get your thirties back either.

And if we’re being honest, most of us spend years waiting for the “perfect time” to start.

Waiting until life settles down.
Waiting until work slows down.
Waiting until the kids are older.
Waiting until we feel motivated.
Waiting until Monday.

But the truth is, progress rarely begins when everything is perfect. It begins the moment you decide you’re worth the effort.

The strongest, healthiest, most confident version of yourself isn’t built overnight. It’s built through the small choices you make today.

One workout.
One healthy meal.
One walk.
One decision to stop putting yourself last.

At BOSS, we’ve watched people completely transform their lives - not because they had more time, better genetics or perfect circumstances - but because they stopped waiting and started.

Your future self isn’t asking you to be perfect.

She’s asking you to begin.

💪 Today is enough.

This is what commitment looks like. 👊

From 186 lbs and 16% body fat… to stepping on stage at 168 lbs and shredded condition.

Contest prep isn’t just about losing weight. It’s about building discipline, consistency, resilience and learning what you’re truly capable of when you refuse to quit.

Proud of the work, the sacrifices, and the transformation earned every step of the way. 🔥

Team BOSS isn’t built on shortcuts.
It’s built on accountability, structure, and showing up even when it gets hard.

The strongest transformations happen from the inside out.
