Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging

Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) is a not-for-profit national research and educatio

The CCAA is unique in Canada as it promotes physical activity and the well-being of older adults through a combination of basic and applied research, educational resources and community-based programs. Basic and Applied research activities are the foundation of the CCAA’s community-based physical activity classes for seniors and the leadership training courses for individuals who work with the age

ing population. Basic research is conducted by researchers and graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Community Outreach team is responsible for applied research which takes place off campus at the Mount. Over 450 London seniors participate in CCAA exercise classes each week. The physical activity class model is based on research conducted at the CCAA and includes cardiovascular, strength, balance and flexibility training. More than 1000 people from across Canada are trained in CCAA leadership training courses each year. These courses are also evidence-based and introduce physical activity programs for seniors across the mobility spectrum.

Congratulations to the fourth-year Community Engaged Learning (CEL) students from the Bachelor of Medical Sciences at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry on their outstanding work with the CCAA.

Two student teams contributed meaningfully to our initiatives. One team focused on a Quality Improvement Project, helping strengthen internal processes and expand the reach of our programs.

The second team evaluated program effectiveness, identified key strengths and barriers, and developed recommendations to enhance our communication strategies.

Their work is already making a meaningful impact. 👏📊

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults—but they’re not inevitable. A new community fall-prevention program taught by an instructor certified through the CCAA is helping older adults build strength, improve balance, and stay active and independent. It’s a great example of how local initiatives can empower people to stay on their feet and age well. Read more about the program and its impact in the Hamilton Spectator.
