In their final slumber, they woke a nation.

Today is Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada.
Since 2013, September 30th has been known as Orange Shirt Day
This year, September 30, 2021, marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and it is to serve as a day of remembrance, reflection, action and learning.
Indian residential schools operated in Canada since the 1870s and the last Indian residential school closed in 1996.  It is estimated that over 150,000 Indian, Inuit, and Métis children attended Indian residential school.
During this time, these children were taken from their families and forced to lose their language, their heritage, their way of life, and most of all their voices to be heard.  Many did not survive.  Due to poor record keeping, it is unknown how many unmarked graves there are of children that were buried on the grounds or surrounding areas of these residential schools.

Today on Orange Shirt Day, we will reflect on all that happened for many years to children and families, all because of where they were born (on the land that is theirs but we now occupy and control), their culture (that white people deemed uncivilized).

Let's all remember, reflect and do our best to reconcile, not only today but everyday.
