I remember the time back in the 80's when Liz and I drove down to the Uchtman Bluetick Farm in Missouri to pick a pup and runs some hounds in the Ozark mountains......the hostility was outstanding...... not to mention the pup turn out to be one of my best hounds!

Uchtman's Grand Nite Southern Blue Hawk won Grand Nite Champion at the Fall Roundup in Stillwater, OK back in the 80's.

"Steady to Wing /Flush" OR "Steady to Wing shot and Fall"? There are two different camps on this topic of Upland Pointing dogs bird work..... One is dog safety as the dog is running while shots are fired and dog handling behavior. The other is fewer birds lost in thicker cover where a dog gets a better mark /locate on both wounded birds or dead birds, so a higher percentage of retrieves, thus losing fewer birds. Both camps have merit. But from strictly a hunting perspective using " Flushing dogs" the dog safety perspective is now moot because the dog is actively engaging the bird at flight and thus getting a better mark and a higher retrieval rate. So if the Flusher style of hunting is deemed an ethical hunting practice, why is "Steady to Wing" frowned on by certain Upland crowd?

An early morning run in the fog building muscle, cardio and endurance as we move closer to gun season. Having your dogs conditioned and ready for season will pay big dividends when the time comes and your weekend is coming up and your buddies are equally excited about the upcoming hunt as you are. Although taking your gun dog for a walk or letting play in your backyard certainly helps, it won't have the same postive effect as building cardio and muscle. You don't need a quad to do this, just get them out for runs and as often as you can! Happy hunting!!!

Some awesome ideas on land management and reclaiming habitat.

Once known as the most iconic game bird in the South, Northern Bobwhite populations have faced major declines due to habitat loss. 🌿🌾

Bobwhite quail depend on early succession habitats like native grasses for nesting, thickets for cover, and open ground for foraging. Landowners can help restore these habitats using key management practices:

🔥 Prescribed Fire: Clears dense litter and stimulates native seed growth.

🚜 Light Disking: Rotates vegetation and exposes bare ground.

🌱 Supplemental Planting: Boosts food sources and native cover.

There are 10's of thousands probably more of people that enjoy hunting behind dogs, and many in-which like to think they were, or are devoted to their dogs well being and field development..... But not many, on the other hand put their entire life and every part of their soul into progressing the development of hunting/gun dogs......its those individuals I have a very deep respect for. Well done Delmar!!!

Happy 100th Birthday to our 2016 T. Boone Pickens Lifetime Sportsman Award recipient, Delmar Smith! A true legend, pure bred and registered.
