Hugo Maradona made his Serie A debut with Ascoli Calcio on September 13, 1987, in a 1-1 home draw against Roma

He played professional football on four continents across fifteen years. But most people just remember him as Diego Maradona's younger brother.

This is Hugo Maradona.

Born in Lanús in 1969, he was the youngest of the Maradona brothers, nicknamed El Turco, Hugo broke through at Argentinos Juniors, the same academy where Diego played a decade earlier. His peak as a player came early, in 1985, when he scored the winning goal for Argentina's Under-16 in a 3-2 win over Brazil in Buenos Aires.

He moved to Napoli in 1987 to play alongside Diego, but that never happened as he was immediately loaned out to Ascoli.

That September, the brothers faced each other on the pitch for the only time in their careers, Diego's Napoli beat Hugo's Ascoli 2-1. That same year, all three Maradona brothers, Diego, Hugo and their older brother Lalo, shared a pitch together in a friendly for Granada against Malmö, part of the deal that brought Lalo to the Spanish club. Both Diego and Lalo scored for Granada as they won 3-2.

His career kept moving from there. He spent two seasons at Rayo Vallecano in Spain, helping them earn promotion to La Liga, then Rapid Wien in Austria, spells in Venezuela and Uruguay, and a long stretch in Japan through the 1990s, PJM Futures, Avispa Fukuoka, Consadole Sapporo, before finishing in Canada with Toronto Italia and finally back home in Argentina, where he retired in 1999. He later took a brief managerial role with the Puerto Rico Islanders in the mid-2000s.

He eventually settled permanently in the Naples area, the city that had embraced his brother, and spent the rest of his life working in grassroots and youth football coaching there.

He briefly considered a run for local office too, standing on a centre-right list for a Naples mayoral candidate before withdrawing ahead of the election. The mayor of Bacoli, the municipality that includes Monte di Procida, later spoke of having personally officiated Hugo's wedding, remembering his simplicity and how completely he'd become part of the local community, calling him a son of the region.

Hugo Maradona died of a heart attack at his home in Monte di Procida on the 28th of December 2021, aged 52, just over a year after Diego's death in November 2020.

Napoli released a statement offering their condolences to the Maradona family, the club that had once tried to bring both brothers together under the same shirt.

🇨🇴⚽️ Juan Pablo Ángel in the Aston Villa shirt.

The Colombian striker joined the club in 2001 from River Plate and became one of the Villans’ most memorable players of the 2000s.

Long hair, claret shirt and plenty of goals — a true classic image of the Premier League era. 🥹🔥⚽ Pure football nostalgia.

He is still the only defender in history to be named the best footballer on the planet. Before he became the best defender of the world in 2006, he was just a kid from the streets of Naples, wearing his Napoli shirt around the neighbourhood.

Happy birthday, Fabio Cannavaro.

Fabio described himself as "scugnizzo," Neapolitan slang for street urchin. Even after breaking into Napoli's first team as a teenager, he still went to play street football with his friends after training, using rubbish sacks as goalposts on whatever patch of ground was free that evening.

The city shaped him as much as the club did, and he never forgot where he came from. Napoli, the city where Diego Maradona is a God.

When a young Cannavaro started training with the first team, one day he went in hard on Maradona during a session and refused to back down. Maradona saw this local boy with no reputation at all challenge him without hesitation, and immediately told people around him the kid would become one of the best defenders in the world.

Two decades later, in Berlin, he lifted the World Cup as Italy's captain and was named FIFA World Player of the Year, still the only defender in the award's history to win it. But underneath all of it, he will always be that scugnizzo from the steets of Napels.
