If you’re using one year of separation as the reason for your divorce, you generally need to be separated for that full year before the divorce can be finalized. This process can take longer if you haven’t reached an agreement on the terms of your separation.

Starting those conversations early can help you be prepared when your one-year mark arrives.

Your relationship with your former partner may have changed, but your role as a parent hasn’t.

There may be difficult conversations, different opinions, and days when co-parenting feels harder than others. Keep coming back to what matters most: creating a sense of safety, stability, and support for your children.

You’re learning a new way of doing things, and that takes time.

Some of the hardest moments can also show you just how capable you are.

You don’t have to feel fearless to move forward. Sometimes, courage is simply acknowledging what scares you and doing it anyway.

Not every step forward feels like a big one.

Sometimes progress looks like getting through a difficult conversation, making a decision you’ve been putting off, or simply having a good day.

Give yourself credit for the small wins, too. They’re still steps forward.

In Canada, you or your spouse generally need to have been a resident of the province where you’re applying for divorce for at least one year.

If you move to another province and later decide to apply for divorce, you may need to wait until you’ve lived there for a year, or your former spouse may be able to apply from the province where they’ve already met the residency requirement.

Moving provinces can affect when and where you can apply, so it's important to understand the requirements for your situation. That's where we can help. Book a consultation to get started.

To emerge is to slowly step into something new. It doesn’t mean having everything figured out or moving on before you’re ready.

Sometimes, it looks like finding your footing, reconnecting with yourself, and taking the next step when you feel able.

A new chapter doesn’t have to happen all at once. You can emerge into it, little by little.
