Nervous system work isn’t the key to a stress free life, it’s the key to handling the stressors that come at you.

We can’t stop responsibilities but we can make them a little easier to handle.

I regularly feel weird about posting what I’ve learned and practices because as my username suggests I should be in the gym. But for the last two years that hasn’t been an option for me so I’m going to continue to share the best wellness help that I can and they’ll be mostly mental until I can heal enough to get back into the gym to help with the physical side again.

When your nervous system is dysregulated, the strangest things can happen. It’s not just an over heightened sense of fear (although that’s there too).

Here are some examples of non scary things that triggered panic attacks for me because it was my body’s only method of response.

This wasn’t an overnight process but the building of tiny habits over time.

I couldn’t believe how hard my body crashed. I had let my anxiety spiral for years and my body fought back and said enough is enough.

It’s not some big overhaul of a life that requires three hours of meditation daily. It’s small habits that can be added to anyone’s routine and a shift in the thinking that’s keeping you feeling anxious.

It doesn’t mean you’re never stressed anymore but that your body and brain can handle it and move forward more easily.

It’s very exciting to me to be able to have this giant list of habits that don’t feel overwhelming to think about but I couldn’t have got there if I didn’t start with a list that included getting out of bed for small chunks at a time.

I’m excited to be able to cook and clean and feel productive again but I couldn’t have done these things when getting up to heat up my lunch needed a 20 minute recovery.

Basically the message I want to send here is that if you’re not where you want to be, finding the tiniest most useless feeling goals is the first step. Getting wins under your belt no matter how small is truly underrated.

There was a time I was struggling to walk for 5 minutes without panicking and worried I’d be bed bound for the rest of my life. Now I’m moving regularly and have a plan to keep building but I couldn’t have done that without starting 5 minutes at a time.

I have spent many hours dwelling on the things I couldn’t do or frustrated at what I thought I should be able to do and it always made my symptoms flare up. Focussing on what I can do, especially if it was really hard before, has truly helped me get better and better over the last two years.

Last week I had a perfect storm of events that I found these feelings slowly creeping back in. Now I’m incredibly lucky that these days don’t come around as often for me anymore because depression used to be my default setting. But of course they still pop up from time to time.

These low mood states can feel like you’re stuck in quicksand and you can’t to get out of bed and the only thing that feels doable is to scroll or stream the same show for hours on end. Your executive function has left the chat. Fortunately I’m building a toolbox to help.

We know that nervous system disregulation is when your brain has a hard time shifting between states (for more about this check out my 3 states post). There are small steps we can take to start to help our brain get the energy it needs to start to move up and down again.

Stimulating the vagus nerve is always step one. It’s simple and starts to make the process easier right away. From there I start looking at moving the body and the breath more. All of these small pieces start working together to get the dust off the cogs in your brain and make things just a bit easier every day.
