WHY DO DEER TYPICALLY SHIFT TOWARD FEED IN THE FALL?
If you’ve been running mineral sites all spring and summer, you may notice deer start showing more interest in energy-rich food sources as fall approaches.
But that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up on your mineral sites.
SPRING & SUMMER
During the growing season, deer are dealing with high nutritional demands associated with body growth, lactation and antler development. This is often when mineral sites see some of their heaviest use.
FALL
As antler growth wraps up, temperatures begin dropping and natural food sources change, deer increasingly seek out foods that provide the energy and calories they need heading toward winter.
That’s where feed becomes a valuable part of the equation.
FEED + MINERAL
It doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other.
While deer may increase their use of feed during the colder months, established mineral sites can continue seeing activity well into fall and winter. We’ve even seen long-term RockTine mineral sites continue getting visited in the middle of winter.
Deer are creatures of habit. A site they’ve been visiting for months, or even years, doesn’t simply disappear from their routine when the seasons change.
Our approach?
Keep the mineral sites established. Add feed as their seasonal nutritional demands change. Let the deer tell you what they’re looking for.
