I've been eating pizza, drinking wine, and missing workouts for decades. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿท๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

I've also been strength training, eating healthy foods, going for walks, drinking water, and prioritizing protein for decades too.

That's what consistency actually looks like.

Somewhere along the way, we've been taught that consistency means perfection.

It doesn't.

Consistency is coming back after the pizza.

Consistency is coming back after vacation.

Consistency is coming back after a missed workout.

Consistency is coming back after a busy week.

Right now, at almost 39 years old, I have more muscle than I've ever had in my life.

Not because I've been perfect.

But because I've been consistent.

The things you do most of the time will always matter more than the things you do some of the time. ๐Ÿ’•

Leaking doesn't always mean your pelvic floor is weak.

In fact, one of the biggest mistakes I see moms make is assuming they need more Kegels.

The pelvic floor needs to be able to both contract AND relax.

If it's already sitting in a constant state of tension, adding more squeezing on top isn't always helpful. In some cases, it can make things worse.

A tight pelvic floor can contribute to leaking, pelvic pain, difficulty fully emptying your bladder, pain with intimacy, constipation, and a feeling of constant tension through your core and pelvis.

It can also make it harder to connect to your lower abdominal muscles.

Here's why:

Your pelvic floor and deep core are designed to work together as a team. When your pelvic floor is already holding on at an 8/10 contraction, it can be difficult to create the coordinated lower abdominal contraction we need for proper core function.

This is one of the reasons I see so many moms struggling to "feel" their lower abs despite doing all the right exercises.

Before we focus on strengthening, we often need to teach the pelvic floor how to let go.

That starts with:

โœ“ Learning to breathe into your ribs and pelvic floor

โœ“ Allowing the pelvic floor to lengthen during your inhale

โœ“ Reducing unnecessary gripping through your core, glutes, and pelvic floor

โœ“ Building a coordinated connection between your breath, deep core, and pelvic floor

Because more tension isn't always the answer.

Sometimes better function starts with learning how to relax first.

Have you ever been told to do Kegels without being assessed first?

Matrescence (noun): the physical, emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual transition into motherhood.

Just as adolescence transforms a child into an adult, matrescence transforms a woman into a mother.

Yet somehow, nobody talks about it.

We're told to expect sleepless nights, diapers, cluster feeding, and the endless laundry.

But nobody prepares us for the identity shift.

Nobody tells us that one day we might look in the mirror and wonder where the old version of ourselves went.

Nobody tells us that we can love our children with every fiber of our being and still miss the woman we were before.

I remember feeling this deeply after becoming a mom.

I didn't understand why I felt so different.

Why I couldn't just "bounce back."

Why I seemed to be grieving something I couldn't put into words.

Now I know I wasn't broken.

I was experiencing matrescence.

The reality is that motherhood changes us forever.

Not because we're failing.

Not because we're doing it wrong.

But because becoming a mother is one of the most profound transformations a human can experience.

You aren't meant to return to who you were before.

You're becoming someone new.

And that process can be beautiful, heartbreaking, confusing, empowering, lonely, and incredible all at the same time.

If you've ever felt like you lost yourself in motherhood, I hope this reminds you that you're not alone.

There's a name for what you're experiencing.

Exhausted.

Overwhelmed.

Short-tempered.

A shell of the woman I used tybno be.

Nobody talks enough about how postpartum can steal pieces of you.
Not forever.

But long enough that you forget what it feels like to be yourself.
There is no mother who goes unchanged by motherhood.

But losing yourself doesnโ€™t have to be the end of the story.
Sometimes itโ€™s the beginning of finding a version of yourself thatโ€™s stronger than ever before. โค๏ธ

Almost 1 year postpartum, Rachel was exhausted.

She felt sluggish, short of breath, and like she was dragging herself through her days with her toddlers.

Fast forward a few months...

โœ” More energy
โœ” More confidence
โœ” A stronger core
โœ” Visible changes in the mirror
โœ” Feeling better than she did before kids

And hereโ€™s my favorite part...

Rachel had never lifted weights before.

Now sheโ€™s strength training, feeling empowered, and realizing sheโ€™s capable of so much more than she thought.

This is why I do what I do.

Because postpartum recovery isnโ€™t just about losing weight or shrinking your waist.

Itโ€™s about rebuilding strength.
Itโ€™s about having energy for your kids.
Itโ€™s about feeling confident in your body again.

Hereโ€™s what Rachel had to say:

โ€œI feel just as good if not better than I did pre-kids. After only a few weeks into her program, I already noticed myself becoming less short of breath and now after completing her program, I have way more energy and confidence, not to mention I like the changes Iโ€™ve seen in the mirror!โ€

So proud of you, Rachel โค๏ธ

Most moms who struggle to connect to their low abs don't actually have weak low abs.

They have a pressure management problem.

Their body has learned to grip through the upper abs, ribs, hip flexors, or low back instead of creating support through the entire core canister.

That's why you can do endless deadbugs, planks, and ab workouts and still feel like your lower abs never quite "turn on."

This exercise is one of my favourite ways to teach that connection.

I call it the Suitcase.

The foam roller goes under the pelvis, not the low back. That's important.

From there, your arms reach away while your legs lower toward the floor, challenging your body to manage pressure and create stability without defaulting to the usual compensations.

Don't focus on how low your legs go.

Focus on keeping your ribs and pelvis stacked, maintaining tension through the front of your torso, and feeling your lower abs working without your low back taking over.

Sometimes the missing piece isn't working harder.

It's finally giving your body the right problem to solve.

Have you tried this one before? ๐Ÿ‘‡
