🏆🌊 “Step Back, Non-Believers": A Legacy That Built More Than Boats
Recently, I (Graham Wilkins, Founder & Co-Owner of Paluski Boats) had the privilege of attending the 54th annual Head of the Trent Regatta in Peterborough. This event served not only as a celebration of rowing but also as a heartfelt tribute to Chris Leach, the visionary founder of Trent University and the Peterborough Rowing Clubs. Reflecting on my own journey, I recall my days as a young rower inspired by Chris’s fearless motto: “Step Back, Non-Believers.” It was more than just a catchphrase—it was a rallying cry that propelled us to dig deeper, row harder, and defy the shadows of self-doubt. Under his guidance, we became a dynamic, cohesive team.
As I progressed from rowing into boatbuilding in the 1980s, crafting not just shells but dreams in the form of kayaks and canoes, I held on to the lessons learned on the water. Today, Paluski Boats stands as a testament to that relentless pursuit of excellence, embodying the spirit of craftsmanship and determination that Chris Leach instilled in us.
This year, I stood watching a new generation of rowers at this year’s Head of the Trent, and I felt a powerful sense of continuity. We are all part of a living legacy—a legacy ignited by a man who inspired countless individuals to believe in themselves and to keep pushing forward one well-placed stroke at a time.
💚 🍻So, here’s to Chris Leach—a true motivator and an enduring influence on hundreds of young lives. His vision continues to ripple through time, inspiring all of us to embrace the journey ahead.
