Elders make good billet families too.
Think billeting is only for families with kids at home? Not at all.
Elders and older adults can make some pretty great billet families. Our players come to La Ronge from different communities and backgrounds, and for many of them, this is their first time living in the North. Living with someone from our community gives them a chance to experience a lot more than hockey.
It might mean sitting around the kitchen table hearing stories, learning about our community, trying new foods, getting out on the land, learning about culture and traditions, or simply having someone to talk to at the end of the day.
And it goes both ways.
Having a billet can bring some extra life into the house - someone to join you for supper, tell you about his day, help carry in the groceries, shovel the step, move something heavy or lend a hand with the little things around the house.
You don’t need to know hockey. You don’t need to have kids at home. And you don’t need to entertain them.
Sometimes a quieter home, a home-cooked meal and someone who genuinely cares how their day went is exactly what a player living away from his own family needs. And sometimes having a young person around who can reach the top shelf isn’t so bad either.
Billeting gives our players a home here, but it also gives them a chance to actually get to know the people and community they’re playing for.
If you have a spare bedroom and some room at your kitchen table, we’d love to talk to you.
