⚠️ URGENT SHELLFISH SAFETY ALERT – AREA 26.3 (KYUQUOT WATERS) ⚠️

Recent Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) test results from Tiicma Fisheries confirm dangerously high toxin levels in shellfish harvested from several areas in Area 26.3, including:

• Cachalot Inlet & Amai Inlet: 900 μg/100g (down from a record 1,700 μg/100g last week)

• Malksope Inlet: 1,600 μg/100g

• Battle Bay: 1,400 μg/100g

• Chamiss Bay & Walter’s Cove: Above the PSP safety limit

🛑 Reminder: The safe limit for human consumption is 80 μg/100g. These levels are considered extremely toxic and can be lethal.

⚠️ Do NOT consume any shellfish from Kyuquot waters until further notice.
We will continue weekly monitoring in coordination with CFIA and BCSGA, but PSP levels remain a significant threat to human health.

Please share this information widely to protect our community.

Stay safe,
Daniel Rabu

Important Community Notice: Shellfish Harvest Prohibition – Cachalot Inlet

Our most recent CFIA shellfish sample from Cachalot Inlet (August 9, 2025) has tested extremely high for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins at 1700 mcg/100g.
• The previous sample was below 25 mcg/100g.
• The closure level set by CFIA is 80 mcg/100g.
• At 1700 mcg/100g, eating shellfish is hazardous to your health and can be fatal.

⚠️ Do not harvest or consume shellfish from Cachalot Inlet at this time.
Symptoms of PSP poisoning may include:
• Numbness or tingling
• Paralysis or difficulty breathing
• Disorientation and confusion
• In severe cases, death

I have never seen PSP levels this high in our area before. I will be contacting CFIA on Monday to confirm whether the test results are conclusive or if there may have been an error in handling.

In the meantime, please advise all community members, harvesters, and visitors of this prohibition. We will provide updates as soon as new test results are available.

With respect,
Isaak (ƛiic̓ma)

Sweet!

kwiisaḥiʔis (kwee-sa-hay-is), the juvenile orca that has been trapped in shallow water near Zeballos, B.C. has swam out of the lagoon and re-entered the open ocean.

At 2:30 a.m. during high tide under a clear, star-filled night sky, kwiisaḥiʔis swam past the sand bar where her mother died, under the bridge at the end of the lagoon and down Little Espinosa Inlet and into the larger Esperanza inlet all on her own.

Today the community of Zeballos and people everywhere are waking up to some incredible news and what can only be described as pride for strength this little orca has shown.
