Happy New Year!

2023 had it's ups and downs! Trying to summarize a year that had so much happen in 10 photos was tough...but I did it!

1. Our version of family.

2. Our long term foster pup found her furever home. We celebrated with Sadie alongside us at the table for a delicious steak dinner on her final night.

3. Mexico...it was "ab"solutely amazing!

4. We started our family in March by adopting Miss Arlyn. She was featured on the news with her siblings after being dumped on the side of the road near Brantford in February.

5. Which made almost losing her in June to a vicious dog attack is probably the most traumatic event I've had to deal with. This is still an ongoing issue with numerous days already spent in trials.

6. I took up tennis a bit more. Joined a tennis club and got the outfit to match the bougeeness 🤣

7. Family again. This time, a day in Toronto with my mom and sister to celebrate my mom's retirement.

8. Playing grand master's nationals in Montreal and finishing 2nd. It was great to be back on the field for a tournament after over a year!

9. My teammates and coach that make training for the challenging sport of Olympic lifting so much fun. Not pictured, my Wednesday morning girl gang. Oh, and I competed 2x and won 2 gold medals 🏅

10. A much needed girls trip...oops, I mean Ultimate tournament in Sarasota. We may have lost every game on the field but we certainly won for fun on the beach.

Cheers to a happy and healthy 2024!

Finishing off this week's client spotlights...meet David!!! He started training with very little experience or confidence in the gym. An encouraging, "you can do this", a laugh from him, a look to the ceiling (or quick prayer 🤔), a few visible turns of the brain, and he crushes anything I ask him too.

Q.What were your beliefs about strength training before you started? Have your beliefs changed? If so, how?
A. I believed that it was more of a focus a more competitive nature of preparing for active activities like sports; as I wasn’t involved in anything I wasn’t sure what my focus should be getting started, and how to recognize progress. My perspective has definitely evolved as I picked health and self-investment as my goals to carry me through, and allow me to keep up with my 8 year old 😉.

Q. What are you most proud of since you started training?
A. There are quite a few things; I’ve learned a lot through progressively challenging myself. Being able to do the sit / stand test, although not gracefully, and having my blood pressure medications no longer needed are two that stand out.

Q. Describe me in 3 words or emojis.
A. 🤪 😊 😎

Q. What's the best advice or hack I've given you.
A. Stretching and how to release specific muscles; I’ve had some challenging days coming into the gym where my shoulders, hips, back, hamstrings don’t really want to work - you’ve always got a few quick movements that help get me back on track for a successful workout.

Q. The holidays are coming. Would I put you on the naughty or nice list?
A. Hopefully the nice list? I’ve tried to be good this year.

Bonus question for my husband:

Q. What's the most embarrassing thing I've done or said?
A. I can’t think of anything embarrassing, although I do find it funny when you carry around a ball on your arm across the gym and say ‘Look at my huge bicep’ 😀

In case you haven't met this vivacious QUEEN 👑, let me introduce Mavis! You always know she's at the gym because, well, you can't miss the knee braces...or her sweet dance moves 😄

Q. What were your beliefs about strength training before you started? Have your beliefs changed? If so, how?
A. I didn't actually think about strength training...I ran...until I joined a gym. I took a 3 month package to work with a trainer so I could see what it was all about. That was 17 years ago. Now I understand that strength training is essential to living a good life. It's not only good for the body, building bones and muscles, balance and agility, but it's good for mental health. I have never done anything as empowering as strength training. It gives me confidence and energy and an inner as well as outer strength.

Q. What are you most proud of since you started training?
A. I am proud of the way I have been able to age and to take on new challenges. But I have to say that of individual lifts I am most proud of my 215 deadlift on my 75th birthday.

Q. Name or describe your least favourite exercise(s). How do I motivate you to do it?
A. I have been resistant to anything new, especially combination exercises because there are several components that require coordination and focus at the
same time. Alison motivates me to do them by breaking down the exercise, describing how each element contributes to the exercise and the benefits of doing the exercise. Most importantly, she lets me know that I "can" do it.

Q. Describe me in 3 words or emojis.
A. Professional, demanding, and supportive.

Q. What's the best advice or hack I've given you.
A. You've always told me that I can do much more than I think I can. I have faith that if you say it, then I can do it.

Q. The holidays are coming. Would I put you on the naughty or nice list?
A. Mixed bag here. I whine and gripe all the time, dance and make bad jokes. However, I am serious about my strength training and keep trying to improve. So, one lump of coal and one sweet treat.

Bonus question for my husband:

Q.What's the most embarrassing thing I've done or said?
A.I've got nothing here.

From Facebook...3 years ago. (Photo is from 2015)

This is definitely not what I see when I look in the mirror today. Am I upset? No. Do I wish I looked like this again? No. (Ok, I do love the short hair) Am I happy with what I see in the mirror today? Yes...most days (to be honest). I too, suffer from bad days, where my mind tells me all the things wrong with me. But I can also easily shift my focus and think about everything I'm capable of...physically and mentally.

We all learn and grow as individuals. This was a period in my life where I was trying to get my business off the ground, so I ran 21-day challenges. I could get people (including myself a couple times) to commit to 21 days of workouts and a very strict diet, but it was temporary. I was in a continuous cycle of trying to find new clients. They would see drastic changes, of course, but in the long term the diet was unsustainable. I'll never forget one client coming in on her final weigh-in day and telling me she had a box of long johns (and not the thermal kind)in the car waiting. It took me time to realize how silly this was. I thought I was helping people eat "healthy" but what I was doing was restricting them of foods they love...and this is not healthy (IMO). Life is far too short to not enjoy foods we love. Can you find a balance? I think so.

Just like I shift my focus away from my appearance, I ask clients to do the same. You need to dig deeper than your vanity because I can almost guarantee that when you don't see the results on the scale or in the mirror, you will become discouraged and want to give up. Your health is so much more than your reflection 🤗

Meet Tim!

You will find Tim hitting the gym in the morning before work! While resting between sets, we talk all things sports 🏀⚾️🏒🏈...which sometimes last a bit longer than it should 🤔

Q. What were your beliefs about strength training before you started? Have your beliefs changed? If so, how?
A. My thoughts were that strength training was a good way to build muscle and lift more, but cardio was where weight/fat loss happen. I now see the value of strength training when it comes to weight loss.

Q. What are you most proud of since you started training?
A. It's been almost 10 years, and I am still going! Outside of Covid, there has been no extended time off. I am more fit, stronger, and in better shape than I have been since high school (a very long time ago).

Q. Name or describe your least favourite exercise(s). How do I motivate you to do it?
A. Any sort of “get up”, Turkish or otherwise. I am motivated by years of experience knowing that Alison knows best.

Q. Describe me in 3 words or emojis.
A. I don’t know how to use emojis….lol

Q. What's the best advice or hack I've given you.
A. Too many to think of one right now.

Q. The holidays are coming. Would I put you on the naughty or nice list?
A. Nice for sure!

Bonus question for my husband:

Q. What's the most embarrassing thing I've done or said?
A. Could not come up with anything embarrassing but I will keep thinking about it. (If he updates me, I'll update you 🤣)

Up first, meet Kymme! You know when she's entered the gym by her infectious laugh that can only make you smile 😃

Q. What were your beliefs about strength training before you started? Have your beliefs changed? If so, how?
A. My beliefs about strength training are pretty general. My beliefs have changed in understanding that for explosive movements, you need to try different things and that heavier weights can make meaningful changes.

Q. What are you most proud of since you started training?
A. I've kept it up even when I was struggling due to my mental health and I've made progress even when I felt like it was slow at times.

Q.Name or describe your least favourite exercise(s). How do I motivate you to do it?
A. I don't enjoy quite a few exercises...least favourite are combo moves or use of sliders. I think I prefer that you're not just trying to keep things fake and positive, but you know when to push.

Q. Describe me in 3 words or emojis.
A. Powerful, sarcastic, multifaceted

Q.What's the best advice or hack I've given you.
A. That successful movements include joint mobility and strength.

Q. The holidays are coming. Would I put you on the naughty or nice list?
A. Nice list

Bonus question for my husband:

Q. What's the most embarrassing thing I've done or said?
A. I don't really think you do embarrassing things. I found it interesting how stressed you get watching the Raptors. And, find it amusing how many bags you carry at times.

I don't normally share much personal stuff but this is necessary.

Part 1...

This is going to be a long one!

I will start with a huge thank you to everyone who helped save our baby girl yesterday. The volunteers, the vets, the vet techs, and the surgeon 🙏 This post can't go without a big thank you to my friend, Genevieve and her boyfriend (a handy vet tech), who saved me, drove Miss Arlyn and me all around KW, Cambridge, and Guelph, did an indepth social media search to find details on the dog and it's owner, bought me dinner, and kept me company until Alex could get home ❤️

This is what happened...

Yesterday, we attended a dog friendly event to raise money for the Humane Society. What was supposed to be a fun outting for Miss Arlyn turned into a nightmare.

Arlyn was attacked by another dog and suffered what would have been a fatal puncture wound in her shoulder if it hadn't been for the quick acting volunteers and a grocery bag as a tourniquet on site. Once she was stabilized there, we took her to the Emergency Vet Clinic in Cambridge. Once there, they ran x-rays to make sure her leg wasn't fractured. During the x-rays, Arlyn blew out a 4cm blood clot and almost bled out. The quick acting vet and techs were able, once again, to apply pressure and bandage her up again. This is where the big decision was needed. Do I bring her home with sedation meds, antibiotics, and lots of bandaging, watch her like a hawk so she doesn't move and reopen the puncture wound, and bleed out at home if I can't bandage her fast enough? Or do I take her to OVC in Guelph where they can open her up, fix the puncture, and if needed, have blood for a transfusion? The cost difference was significant, but I knew that I couldn't handle this on my own, so off we went.

Arlyn safely made it out of surgery around 9pm last night. Spent the night at the clinic. And...we just received the call that she is ready to come home for 2 weeks of boring rest 😴

This alone is horrific and traumatizing. Knowing all of it could have been prevented is absolutely blood boiling 😡😠

Stay tuned for Part 2...coming soon!
