Siu Nim Tao (小念頭) is the foundation for all proceeding adaptions and applications in the Wing Chun system. It is the "little idea" or seed from which all modifications spring forth. However, without the proper understanding of the essential structural alignment(s), the musculoskeletal system's function within that framework, and the underlying principles that shape the practitioner's formative practice, one is without an accurate apprehension of the skill the system aims to develop within us.
Each section of this form reveals and emphasizes a particular set of principles and concepts that develops one's understanding of the overall function of a given tool derived from the basic actions. For example, stance and posture are the first applications to signify the importance of a stable, balanced position from which to develop power. What appears to be a primarily "hand-heavy" fighting system is, in fact, entirely dependent upon the control and energy produced from a robust waist connection. This connection finds qualification only by appropriately ensuring the proper positioning of the hips, legs, and spine.
Four critical principles introduced within the first section of the form are Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma (stance), Chiu Ying (correct facing), Jung Sam Sin (centerline theory), and Mai Jaang (buried elbow). These four principles and their application form the basis of the practice of the Wing Chun system. Without the proper coaching and education, which requires a hands-on approach from a qualified instructor, one is left to their own devices and presuppositions; this produces poor habits and reinforces pre-existing ones.
By submitting to the Wing Chun system's principles and parameters, we relinquish our need to know precisely how it is we ought to accomplish a given task in a combative scenario by our untrained estimations. We then begin to depend upon the generations of teachers and students that have come before, shedding their blood, sweat, and tears to form what we now reap the benefits of today. Principles are greater than preferences. Once we humble ourselves to acknowledge our limitations and accept that the system is better than we are, an entire world of simple, direct, and efficient combat skills opens up before us.
Get humble, stay disciplined, and remember that the system is better than we are.
