Spots available for this weekend for stop the bleed and land navigation hosted by East Grey Anglers & Hunters in Meaford.

This is a custom course for East Grey Hunters and Anglers Association. There will be a Land Navigation Course and Stop the Bleed Course. With the Yule tide over, and the new year upon us, everyone is trying to make good on their new year new me bu****it resolutions. And while we are in favor of bettering yourself, in fact we are all about it. But, you should do it in meaningful ways. So, for this year, with all the division we’ve had over the last few years, we’d like to see you all focus on building not just yourselves, but your community, your tribe, your gang!

Today is the winter solstice, which marks the first day of Yule, the traditional midwinter festival of the Nordic people. It is a time to celebrate the return of the sun, and the lengthening of the days, to thank the gods for all they have bestowed upon us over the past year, and to remember and honor our ancestors.

Odin, the wise Jólfaðr, we thank you for the wisdom you have given us and for teaching us that the way to our goals is through hard work and self sacrifice. May we continue to grow wiser with each passing day.

Freyr, the bringer of crops, we thank you for the bounty you have provided us through the year and ask that you watch over us so that we may enjoy a peaceful and prosperous new year. We also ask you grant us the strength to defend that peace should someone try and break it.

Njordr, the brave seafarer, who controls the way the wind blows. Thank you for filling our sails and keeping our course straight and true. May you continue to grant us safe passage in the coming year.

Thor, the hammer wielder, we thank you for the strength you have imbued us with and for watching over Midgard. May we always be as courageous as you.

Sol, the bright and shining sun, we thank you for the light and warmth you bring us, and welcome your return to Midgard. May our deeds shine as bright as your rays.

Today, December 20th is Mother’s Night, the official beginning of the celebration of Yule. Today we honor and offer thanks to our female ancestors, those who are believed to watch over our families and help us in times of need. These figures are known in Norse mythology as The Disir. If you don’t want to work with your female ancestors for any reason, you can always opt to honor spirits of the land where you live, or even Fr**ga, the All-Mother.

So to Fr**ga, the spirits of the land, and all the mothers, past and present, today we honor and thank you for all you have provided us with.

Ragnarok Tactical’s Map Reading and Land Navigation course is for anyone interested in learning the art and science of navigation using a paper map and magnetic compass. Students will become proficient in map reading and land navigation, and develop the knowledge and skills to support route selection and team movement. The course will be delivered in two parts.

First, students will participate in a day of classroom (or distance learning) learning to use a map and demonstrating proficiency with the theory of map reading.

Second, students may attend a field exercise where they will navigate with a partner where they will be given directions or locations and need to navigate a route to pre-determined locations.

With the colder weather upon us, snow starting to fall in some areas of the country and the Yule tide just shy of a month away, it’s a good time to think about hospitality.

While it’s great to receive all of the cool stuff, this time of year is about giving, so embrace that true Viking spirit of hospitality and invite your friends over, share food and drink with them, let them warm their cold limbs by your fire.

If the gods have been generous, share that generosity with not just your friends, but your local community as well. Hospitality extends beyond the confines of your home.

Woden’s Day Wisdom

Odin knew that to achieve great things he would have to make sacrifices, including self sacrifice. Now… maybe plucking out your own eye, or wounding yourself with a spear and hanging from a tree for nine days is a little much in this modern world, but… can you put down that Xbox to get some more dry fire practice in, or watch one less episode of trash TV a night so you can get some exercise? Absolutely! Those are easy sacrifices we can all make, but few often do. The harder sacrifices are the ones that don’t just remove comfort, but actively make us uncomfortable, and these are the self sacrifices that can help you achieve greatness! It’s not just turning off the TV and going for a walk, but getting that walk in when the weather is crap, when you are already tired… pushing to get that extra kilometer in and pushing through that mental barrier of discomfort to reach your full potential!
